In a dilemma can anyone help ?

During re-assembly of the brakes on my MK 3 Golf, there's a wedge key which slots into the assembly.

Which way does it go round as there is a 'nipple' on one side only & there's a hole at the top of the shoe, which when inserted fits into it.

However the Haynes manual says to fit it the other way round with the nipple away from the shoe.

Anyone know which way its supposed to go & why ?

    Thanks
