I've been toying with the idea of an A6 for some time - with the intention of trying to get one in the Spring 2015. An option has come up for one a little earlier than that, but it doesn't have the Bose audio system that impressed me when I heard it in a car a while back. Two things, though:

    1) Is the standard one "nearly as good"?

    2) If one had somewhere between £500 and £1,000 to lavish on the standard system to upgrade some components, would that result in something as good?

I have the standard head unit in mine with all the speakers replaced with Audison Voce in the stock locations, an Audison Bit 10D to shape the sound and Audison Thesis quattro and uno amplifiers driving the speakers and a 10" JL Audio sub in the side of the boot. I've also got a big chunk of vibration deadening material under the carpets, doors, firewall and boot floor.

You wouldn't get that for £1000 but speakers and a Bit 10 plus a 5.1 amp and proper subwoofer should be feasible. It's the Bit 10D that interfaces. Using the 10D means you can pick it up straight off the fibre optic and it's a very clean sound.

The standard system is great for vibrating the door panels, but the door panels specifically shouldn't vibrate really.

i would spend some time listening to the standard system and if you hate it, then I'd wait. If not, just leave it. You'll never see the money back!

Wow! I need to do some reading....

...although to a certain extent, reading behind the lines, one might get a noticeable improvement from simply (Is it simple?!) deadening the door panels.

Yes. The tailgate in particular is very noisy on the avant.

...is there a special place in this forum to discuss audio? Doesn't seem that specific to A6?

I wasn't impressed by the standard 10 speaker 180 watts unit. The Bose I have now in my view is far superior, and I'd pay the grand for it every time.

I think I'm in your camp there. But if I could, for £1,000, upgrade to a "better than Bose" system, maybe that's the best option - though maybe not in terms of residuals.
