    Hi,

Like many others, my A6 suffers from milky and discoloured chrome trim, the worst of which is on the top of the doors at the base of the window glass, and the strip across the boot lid.

The cost to replace, and fact it will just return has stopped thoughts of replacement, although I was considering chrome wrap.

My car is canyon red so I don't think another colour would look right.

Anyway, seen this and was wondering if anyone has experience of tape and what kind of result could be expected:

Chrome Detailing Foil Tape Car Stripe Coachline 10m Roll x 20mm Wide NEW | eBay

I'd only try the simpler bits as mentioned above, and I wouldn't expect this to last forever.

Thinking it maybe worth a shot to see how it turns out !

I guess it's worth a try if 2cm will give you enough to tuck under both edges, looking at the width it might be close, appreciating that without sufficient behind it will lift too easily.

    At that price worth trying!

It's available in widths up tp 50mm so should be o.k. on the wider parts of the trim.

Interesting. Any idea/instructions on how to remove/detach the chrome strips?

Haj, I think OP would do them in situ, others have on here.

Would be interesting to see how they hold up to the elements & washing

Although, having a look at mine today the rear quarterlites on my saloon may prove tricky for two reasons:

    1) It gets quite wide and to get around it will invariably require cutting and a join to get around the curve
    2) Unlike the doors where there is a visible and workable gap, there is no such gap there as it seems to be moulded to the glass surround

    Hi,

I wouldn't look to remove the trims, just go over and neatly tuck in all round. Seen a few vids on utube, looks do-able but it may end in tears!

I wasn't going to attempt the larger bits like quarter lights, far more involved and beyond my abilities. Luckily these aren't too bad on mine.

Don't think kids likely to peel it off, shouldn't (he says !!) stand out that there is tape there.

Just an idea at this stage but could improve things for a reasonable cost and if it only lasts a year or two ....

I would prefer real metal, far easier to look after and more durable. This fake plastic stuff doesn't stand the test of time and seen other cars (like 4 month old Pug 508SW) with same issue.

Have you considered the Plastidip route Apole?
Make them black, would be a great contrast against the red too!

Just at thought................check out the process on youtube if you haven't seen it already

    Cheers buddy

    Jim,

My understanding of plastidip is that if you want a gloss finish (it will be matt as standard) you need to apply another product on top, so the end result will cost in excess of £35.

However with that you should be able to do all chrome (even the front grill chrome) for that price & in places that tape couldn't possibly reach!
