    Hi Guys,

This is my first post here - I'm just about to buy an A6 Avant 2.5 V6 TDi (155Bhp) and just wanted to check a few things:

Fuel consumption - It's the 155Bhp version - does anyone have real-world consumption figures for this (I've scanned the forum and found lots of 180Bhp answers).

(I'm coming from a 170BHp V5 Bora, and don't think I can stomach the 1.9TDi's lack of grunt)

Engine Upgrade - Is it possible to upgrade the 155 to 180 (Chip) or is it a different head?

It's done 77K and hasn't had it's cambelt changed yet, so other than that and the CVT gearbox oil change is there anything else that I should be looking out for on an A6?

I've already read the Buying advice on an A6 thread.

    Thanks!

    Rob

the 180hp version has a bigger turbo. But these can be remapped to about 200hp.

See the thread about the Remap day at chippedUK in my signature.

    Thanks, Mark

There is no difference between the turbochargers in a4 cars with the 150/180 Bhp. The difference is inside the head(cam followers instead of cam rollers), bigger nozlles(7 holes as oposed to 6 for the 150 Bhp), a remapped ECU and a different fuel pump. I have seen german/swedish cars remaped by Van Aaken and Steinbauer that pushed well over 240 Bhp. The thing is, the clutch starts to slip and the 6 speed gearbox is not that tough as it might seem. There is a guy in Czech Republik that had a v6 tdi with a VNT 25 turbocharger(the one fitted on the bmw 3.0D), fully custom remaped ECU and a Quaife gearbox that pushed over 400 Bhp ! He had to put a dual exit exhaust to cope with the smoke...

    Thanks for the info.

On chipping/remapping the 2.5, are there any recommendations? Either remapping or re-chipping/plug-in box.

I've had one company quote £700+VAT for a remap and another smaller company refuse to remap anything to do with a Multitronic gearbox.

I have exactly the same car and for the last 5 years it has done pretty consistently 34-38mpg. Fill it up with luggage and go down the motorway and it threatens to do 40mpg. I've never beaten 42mpg. Others with the same engine in an A4 claim high 40's.

No major problems that I can point you at, other than flakey electrics like airbag lights and indicator relay (new wiring loom and new relay required). I had 2 new CV joint boots under 50K, so watch out for that as well.

    Hi Teflon,

That's great, thanks for the info - I've test driven it and it feels tighter and newer than my previous VW Bora V5 did when it was new. The gearbox changes seamlessly both up and down and the engine sounds perfect from cold.

I'm getting the garage to do the timing belt and water-pump before I pick it up.

    Thanks for the information!

    Rob

I have a 2002 155BHP 2.5tdi. 105Kmiles. Don't mess with the engine output. If you mess up the gearbox, it will cost you £5K. Problems to date are. cv boot at 80Kmiles, indicator switch relay built into the hazard warning switch, twice replaced. brake switch at 90K. I get 40-44mpg. Lowest 39mpg best 46mpg. I worry about the multi gearbox failing and recently had the timing belt bolt failure although this may be my fault as I did the timing belt change 20K miles ago and possibly tightened the bolt too much due to a faulty torque wrench. During the diagnostics I found that I have camshaft wear which is worrying as I have always used 506.00 spec oil and changed it every 11,000 miles instead of 22K miles. looks like I will be replacing 4 camshafts next year. Any comment on camshafts?

Hi therre, I too have an A6 2.5 tdi 155 Auto. Mine is a 2000 model just before the CVT. Apart from my thread in A^ tdi starting problem, I have had trouble free driving. I bought it in June last year with 72k on th eclock, she has now done over 108k. I took it to Turin with 5 up and full of luggage and she still returned an average of 38mpg on cruise control for 1100 miles at 85mph. I just love it. Around town expect 35ish; on a motorway run 38-40. The computer range on a full tank regularly reads 550miles at the start of a journey, and i tend to cruise at around 85-90 most of the time. Things to watch for? Not much really. I have had 1 CV joint and two boots and a rea wheel bearing...and that's it......apart form my current problem, which I hope is not the diesel pump!!! Go for it mate, youo will not be disappointed.

Thanks guys, picked it up yesterday & I'm very pleased with it. I'll have to learn how best to drive it as I'm used to the instant power of the V5 on a manual.

Just washed it, waiting for the Grand Prix to finish and then I'm polishing, Waxing and treating all the leather! :0)

    Cheers!
