The coil symbol flashed, indicating an ECU fault (it's a 2L TDI), but didn't light up again after I stopped and started again. The check engine light stayed lit obviously. I have a OBD2 CANBUS cable knocking around somewhere (from my old Volvo S80), but don't know anyone with a VCDS cable. Will the CANBUS cable let me read the codes and reset the light or do I really need a VCDS one?

You need VCDS mate. Search on here for VCDS users map and see if anyone is local to you.

A guy at work had a VCDS cable so I scanned the codes earlier.

    1 Fault Found:
012547 - Motor for Intake Manifold Flap (V157)
    P3103 - 000 - Malfunction - Intermittent
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00100000
    Fault Priority: 1
    Fault Frequency: 35
    Time Indication: 0

    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 0 /min
    Speed: 0.0 km/h
    Load: 0.0 %
    Voltage: 12.62 V
    Bin. Bits: 00001010
    Torque: 0.0 Nm
    Torque: 300.1 Nm

So it looks like I have a knackered throttle body, but it could be a lot worse. It'll be next week before I can get the part and do the swap (with help from How to replace intake manifold flap motor, aka "Throttle body valve" on 2.0 tdi engine (Audi A6) - YouTube) but I need a car for the weekend. Is it safe to drive in the meantime?
