I have a whining noise in 4th gear usually around 40mph which goes away when I lift my foot off the throttle. Any ideas. 2011 A3 1.6tdi. 50k miles.

All, the whining noise is loudest at 50mph. Engine revs doesn't affect pitch of whine as it's the same in 3rd or 4th gear but it disappears when clutch is depressed and lessens when foot is lifted off throttle.

I initially thought it may be a worn clutch release bearing but they usually make noises when the clutch is depressed. I'm afraid it sounds like a gearbox problem.
Personally I'd take it to the main dealer. From what I understand providing the car has a full Audi service history they will look at a goodwill claim for vehicles up to 5 years old with up to 100,000 miles on the clock.

Thanks. The noise is the same in 3rd and 4th gear irrespective of revs and always around 45mph. It is more apparent when feathering the throttle and goes away when foot lifted off throttle or clutch depressed. Any ideas. I'm confused.
