First thing is have you located it on the engine?
if you have I will go through with you on how to replace it.

theres a complete easy way round this considering your engine is the same lay out as my 02 b6 1.9tdi 100hp. first of locate your thermostat. mine was just down below the alternator. if this is your case. take the engine cover of. disconnect your battery completly. go to the thermostat, there will be 2 small bolts holding the thermostat in place. undo these but make sure your coolant has cooled down or expect a burny hand. once youve undone them the stat housing will and should freely pull away from engine wall. either your stat will come out with the housing or will stay in place with engine side wall. either way remove stat and see what state its in. if its all gunked up be sure your heater matrix will be to. its worth doing a flush. were the stat housing is it will have a coolant pipe / tube push it down towards the undertray so your water / coolant runs out and should nearly empty most of your coolant. so your ready to fit the new stat and plz do go genuine. somtimes its better to also buy a new stat flange / housing as most of the time this can lose inner parts. and also go buy a new stat gasket an o ring. so fit the new stat put a dab of glue to hold the stat in place and some on the oring as these tend to fall out when replacing. and back track everything youve done also make sure you go get coolant as you will lose most of it doing this. now you should have the new stat replaced and now refill water / coolant to the correct ratio. plz if you do have any queries pm me an ill talk you threw from were you are hope this helps

Personally I would not glue the stat in place if it does not hold in the housing with the o ring then the two tabs on the housing are broken common problem I would just get a new housing cheap part anyway that way you out the I ring on the housing fit the stat in the housing and turn clockwise I think and that way you will have a snug fit in the housing.

any joy with the stat update plz. just to rectify the part where i said about putting a bit of glue to hold the stat in place. only meant like put 2 small dabs either side just to hold stat in place dont by all means put a whack all round. just a wee tip as this helped me.
