I've just changed the engine in my 2002 passat 130tdi, using a recon unit and transfering the injectors, cam and flywheel sensors etc from my old engine.
On start up the engine runs and idles perfectly.
If I try and rev it at all it coughs and stops.
    Any ideas please?

make sure you have got the intake manifold change over and egr valve solonoids connected correctly and the vac pipes connected correctly,if you mix them up you will shut the air supply off, disconnect the vac pipe to the black plastic vac unit on the side of the egr so it stays open and see if it revs.If this isnt the cause then try and obtain some fault codes also check the fuel pipes to the tandem pump are connected in the correct direction.

    Thanks for the reply.
The inlet changeover flap is open until the engine is switched off, then it closes for a few seconds before opening again.
Not sure about the EGR valve, although disconnecting the vac pipe has no effect.
I'm pretty sure the fuel lines are connected correctly at the tandem fuel pump.
How do I get the fault codes?
    Thanks

the inlet is correct then,so you could do with a fault code reader and double check the fuel pipes for correct flow of the fuel also check the engine speed sender behind the oil filter housing near bottom of the block is connected.

Thanks to A8 tech for the advice.

I bought a Gendan interface and using downloaded Vag Com software found the fault code 16705, indicating engine speed sensor problems. I fitted a new one and also a new Maf sensor, since the old engine was damaged by water ingress through the air intake and was suspect.
The engine ran and accelerated as it should in the garage.
On a test drive the acceleration felt very fierce and was accompanied by a whistling sound from under the bonnet.
Back home I found an intercooler pipe had become detached.
Restarting the engine I briefly took the revs to 3000, when there was a muffled pop from the engine compartment. The exhaust now sounds like it is blowing although I cant feel or see any leak. The turbo also doesn't appear to cut in.

Could the EGR valve have stuck open?
Is turbo overboost usually caused by the charge pressure sensor, the turbo control valve or the turbo itself?
Could the cat be blocked maybe?

Any help would be appreciated. I really dont want to take it to a specialist since I've done all of the donkey work changing the engine myself!

if your old engine was damaged by water then it could have got into your exhaust/ cat and damaged / blocked something that side of things. cats are v delicate . hth
