As per title, can some explain if a faulty sensor can cause excess white smoke, and if so how?
i mean what is the technical explanation?

i know I have oil consumption issues, and I am topping about a litre every 500 miles.
however recently the smoking was particularly bad at idle, during gear changes and when overran usually coming off motorway. I developed tell tale crank position sensor issues with stalls, cutting out EPC light and VCDS confirmed the engine speed sensor,

I have just replaced it, cleared codes, driven fine for 2 days and the small miracle of a lot less smoke- I just can't understand why? Is it a coincidence or is it linked.

the car did have a poor service record prior to my ownership and I had accepted bad internals...perhaps it's too wishful to think oil consumption will get better too...

Did you use VCDS to scan car? There may be further codes stored. You haven`t overfilled the oil have you?
Check breathers etc. as a check.
With the oil its burning, there is a chance the Cat is contaminated and possibly Lambda issues. Can you get an emission test to check? If all okay it should pass a test no problem.

Vcds showed engine speed sensor fault; now that it has been replaced there is a massive improvement in amount of smoke.
prior to the sensor failing there had already been an oil consumption issue. I am suspecting now that the engine must have been running rich due to the sensor fault and that was causing the severe smoking and oil breakdown ( exhaust is very black).

i have deleted the codes ans rescanned and the only one that comes up is coolant sensor at radiator outlet( which I have previous replaced with an aftermarket sensor).

a few weeks ago I cleaned out all the breather hoses and pcv valve; I am thinking about pcv deletion but haven't got the confidence to do it yet.

i haven't done enough miles yet to judge the oil consumption, but there is less smoke since replacing engine speed sensor so I assume less oil burning too.
It is due for its Mot in a month anyway so emissions will be tested
