A faulty coolant temp sender will make the engine do all sorts of odd things so fit a new one and see how it goes. What is the HVAC code?

Yes, fit a new coolant temp sender.

The HVAC code is broken down into three versions

00604 Potentiometer G113 in the positioning motor V71 (for air-flow flap)

    1) Short to earth/SP Open circuit/short to positive /SP
    2) Adaption limit exceeded (This fault is only detected during basic setting)
    3) Potentiometer G113 in V71 defective

    Not with you?

So the temp gauge reads 75 and the electric cooling fan kicks in or the mechanical one? What is the cars engine code? Have you used VCDS to see what the Measuring Blocks reported temperature is?

It may be that someone has altered the idle speed in VCDS but if you can't access the engine ECU you are stuffed!
