    Hi,

I've had my 02 plate Bora TDI ST for a few months now, but yesterday the oil warning light came on. No worries I thought, just check oil and top up, which I did but the warning light stays on?

Do you think that I might have any other issues regarding the oil?

Reading through some of the topics on the forum it mentions being able to reset some warning lights with the use of VAG-COM? Surely I don't need this to to reset an oil level light, please tell me I don't.

If I do will most garages be able to do this and any ideas of cost.

    Thanks in advance .... Steve

The message was "CHECK OIL LEVEL" and the little oil can symbol light comes on.

Ohh right, you might just need the fault to be cleared, You need the fault to be read, It couls be the oil level sensor, I had a problem like that, i had to have the sensor changed, it cost £200 to have done.

It could also be a faulty bonnet switch. The dash needs to know that the bonnet has been opened to allow the yellow oil level can warning to clear.

Faulty bonnet switch? Do you know where this switch is located, should be under the bonnet somewhere, right

I think it might be best to get it plugged into a fault reader/finder, although I didn't fancy driving the car with this problem.

    Thanks for the help.

Spot on, found the bonnet sensor, cleaned it and all sorted. Much apprecaited, many thanks.

    Hi Guys,

Just been reading the other threads to see if my issue has happened to anyone and I think the original issue on this one closely matches my issue. Basically I got one of my mates (fairly sound with car knowledge as he has worked for vw in his youth (10 or so years ago and always services his own family cars).

So I got him to do a simple oil and oil filter change on the bora (tdi 130 auto) and he recommended filling the oil to about 3.5 ltrs and add half a litre when the level goes low.

Fast forward about 3 weeks and I get the check oil level warning appear while driving. I parked up and checked it to find it was empty. No sign of any leakages on the drive or under the car. So I went home and left the car for a couple of hours to cool down (only did about 3-4 miles initially) and the oil level was still showing empty.

Opening and closing the bonet did not reset any switches however when i topped up the oil with 1.5ltrs, the oil warning light stopped and the oil gauge showed full. Weird maybe the oil moved around or something else happened.

My concern is can I drive the car with the oil level about 2-3mm above full?

Please help as I have to do a journey tomorrow and would rather try draining some out if it will do damage to the pistons/headgasket/anything else.
Life is not boring once you drive a bora

Driving with the oil over maximum is not advisable.
