VW Passat 2005 B6 Rear Calliper Problem

Hello,

This is probably the wrong section to ask this but i couldn't figure out which one to put it in so it ends up getting moved i apologise.

But i have been having some problems with rear brake callipers on Passat B6, 2005, 2.00 TDI Sport. I have read up and i know its a common problem with this model of car but need some advice.

About 6 months ago they callipers got stuck on and the parking brake warning light come on and they had to be manually unwound so i was able to drive the car. In the end i bought two new callipers which cost about £400 from EuroCar Parts. A friend of mine who is a mechanic fitted them quite easily but the car was still throwing up the fault on the dashboard but after a few hours of playing around with the VW sortware and disconecting the battery it cleared.

Since then i have had no problems with the brakes and they seem to be working perfectly fine to me, or so i thought...

Put my car through an MOT today and it has failed on the brakes.

The test notes read - RBT Park brake efficiency 8%

Im guessing thats the results they had from the rolling road test, seems strange to me that they have only 8% efficiency as i regulary park car outside my home which is on a hill and have no problems.

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced the same problem and what they did about it and is there a solution?

Seems as if the basic settings have been upset and need re-doing. This can be done in VCDS, although it's usual for the brakes to re-adjust themselves unless the caliper's been adjusted back too far -- i.e. further back than one complete turn anti-clockwise -- to get them onto the disc. Parking on a hill with gear select in Park wouldn't give you any noticeable problem; or perhaps 8 percent is enough to hold it?

Were the pads new that you fitted to the new calipers? Try turning the triple square clockwise soas the pads are onto the discs but not tight. Then anti-clockwise a quarter turn.

Don't touch the brakes. Ask the MOT station to double check or try another MOT station. If epb is working on a hill it cannot be 8% efficient.

I am taking it to a VW Audi specialist on Monday and i explained what the other MOT station said as well.

So im going to take the failed MOT slip with me, to be honest the place i took it to i was told afterwards that they have a bad rep for ripping people off.

It also needed 2 new tyres (rear) a cv gaiter joint and 2 rubber suspension bushes, they wanted £15 for the gaiter + £60 to fit and 2 suspension bushes @ £25 each + £137 to fit! All this + VAT. Sounds over the odds to me considering the rubber bushes are £8 from Euro Car Parts!

They never actually quoted for the brakes though which is strange but they said they wasn't sure if the callipers needed adjusting or if it was electrical. I just don't understand how they can be working at 8% and be able to park on hills fine.

Just to be clear: it's the torx head in the centre of the caliper (T45) that you turn. Clockwise releases the caliper, and anti-clockwise tightens. Must be the heat...

What happened at the dealer?
