I'm looking to spend about 13-14K which means I'm probably looking at 2010 models
Require 5 doors for the kids

Apart from that I'm open to suggestions as to whether its diesel or petrol 1.9 or 2.0 etc. I'm interested in knowing if there are any inherent problems with certain models or years which I need to avoid

Thanks in advance

Get the newest you can would be my advice from personal experience. The 2012 facelift model is even better but may be outside of your budget.

i had a late 2008 A4 B8 (common platform) and had a disappointing number of problems. I think a few 'fixes' and new features arrived by 2010 - which you are aiming for.

The engines have been enhanced over time too. There isn't a 1.9 by the way although there is a 1.8T 170 petrol which is good. The petrol or diesel question is personal preference to be honest. I suspect the diesels might get closer to their published mpg if you have any concern about economy. My A5 TDI can get 53 on the motorway and 45 elsewhere. Short/town driving can drop into the 30s though.

Also check out the A4 B8 forum too. These models are common cars with different badges and there is some discussion about some early 2.0 petrol engines consuming oil. The three litre diesel is often raved about. A good compromise?

Happy hunting and test driving!
