I have a lovely 2006 TDI auto which was fine until a couple of days ago. My key fob opens the door but when I pop it in the dash lock, the usual steering wheel auto unlock no longer actions and the dash lights don't come on.

I called the RAC and after 2 hours of his best efforts, the guy couldn't offer any clue as to the problem. He had an RAC diagnostic but no VAG Com.

The big problem is that the car has an electronic handbrake which can't be released so I am struggling to get the car to a garage (the RAC suggested a crane). If anyone has any steers or knows of a good specialist in Newcastle upon Tyne, it would be much appreciated.

You have more than one key to try? State/age of battery? Anything changed on the car recently?

Thanks for the reply Mark. Battery was tested and is good. I tried both pip keys and the plastic key. All showing the same symptoms. Bad times me thinks...

Best specialist I've found in Newcastle is swift motor engineering based in westerhope, redburn estate. They really know their stuff when it comes to anything vag. Give them a call and see what they can do for you.

Doogle, did you google (poet and didn't know it!) your issue and see what it returns?

I did 'Audi A6 steering lock fail' and there were quite a few:

    Read this.

Problem with key or starter? - Page 3

Your J329 relay lives in the first slot the empty one in the picture.

You may have the same fault.

Besides J329 there is also J694 which may need investigation, in second row 3rd slot the 2nd relay out of the 2 occupying it.

You may also wish to check fuses 38 (30A) , 42 (30A) , 44 (15A) , these are located end of dash behind panel drivers side.

You may also wish to check fuse 1 (15A) , black carrier (ST) , located end of dash behind panel passengers side.
