Not sure where to stick this - didnt see it under the general one but probably more worthwhile under Audi due to the scums specifically targeting them

Cheers for that story, after reading it I thought I'd try something with my car.

So using black key in door lock it would not unlock locked car but would lock it.

Next when car is unlocked it would start car, so then I locked car, sat inside and thought as soon as I insert/turn black key in ignition alarm should sound and car won't start??

    BUT IT DID!

Yes peeps I sat in a locked car, turned ignition to on with black key and the doors unlocked/alarm disabled and car started!

    OMG!

Thanks everyone, as you all say we are blessed the family didn't have personal interaction, I can replace the care but will miss my Le Man's. The house has been secured yesterday with all new locks etc and I am adding some cctv as well.

That is really shocking to hear Gups
I need to dig mine out and try the same but if this is indeed normal, Audi need to act on it quickly or this will fast turn into the BMW situation a few months back

I'm gonna do some more tests, sit longer in car, as interior monitoring should have set alarm off when I moved inside.

Now yesterday when I was doing research to answer a question in a thread I saw in SSP326 Audi A6 2005 Electrical System on page 17 this:-

The lock barrel in the ignition switch is not coded mechanically, which means that the turning movement can be performed with every A6 '05 key.

My plastic key must have a chip in it, I gave both my spare metal keys to my kid and asked to stand at the end of the road after locking me in, so no way signal from chip in metal keys was getting there when I used plastic key.

I did some googling and general consensus is plastic key not have transponder in it, does mine have one?

Sorry mods I know I shouldn't double post, but just wanna get subscribers sent emails/get members to see.

The metal key will allow manual unlocking/locking of my car but plastic one only locking.

I timed how long it takes for interior monitoring to activate and found out there is a clear dead zone which allows me to enter plastic key without real evasive measures (how any normal person would enter key) .

When sitting in locked car and set off alarm via interior monitoring, the alarm switches off as soon as I inserted plastic key or turned it one position! sorry I can't be exact as I was so shocked to experience all this!

I really feel let down by alarm system especially as only last week I think I was bleating on how it was thatcham approved .

    Gups
I too tried this yesterday - I am getting similar results BUT in my case, I can unlock the door too with the plastic key

    So my scenario:
Car locked + armed via remote

Insert plastic key into keyhole on drivers side and turn right. Once you meet some resistance, go a little further to the right. This unlocks the door
After this, insert key into the dash and car starts up.

Our plastic keys have a transponder in them, so they function fully like the metal keys other than having remote unlock/locking buttons, that is also why the alarm if set off and key turned in ignition it disarms it.

I was going to open the cover on the plastic key where transponder is but by reading a document I got confirmation that our keys have them.

    Hello guys,

The plastic key has a chip inside which allows the car to start so in theory how it should work would be it should open and close the drivers door/passengers door some cases it may not due to the fact its only a plastic key and you can't put the force you require if the lock is a bit old.

Keep those keys well away from the car. Also make sure when buying a VAG that you get all the keys for the car if not call a locksmith to de-activate them as there is a lot of cars getting sold and then someone coming back to take them with another key.
