Hi, my friend has changed his oil and filter and is unable to stop the filter from leaking. He has replaced the o ring seal and tried varying tightness of the filter housing.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Look for a tiny crack in the plastic upper housing. This part can crack if someone overtighten it

Did he use a genuine filter and seal.

    25 Nm
Use 32 mm socket to loosen and tighten

Thanks will tell him to check the plastic housing, not sure if it was a genuine filter / seal.

Run the engine with the dipstick removed to see if things improve, there may be a crankcase pressure issue.

Worth strapping some rags around the opening to keep the splashes under control...

Its worth checking to see if the sealing ring has been placed in the correct groove of the filter housing. It should not be directly under the lip of the housing - this happened to me on a different car and the result was the same as you described. Cant find image on internet but this video might help - 2004 Volvo XC90 2.5T FWD Engine Oil Change - YouTube (23min mark). And if this is your problem then you should replace the seal again

As dengsx said above - If the O ring is in the correct place, it is impossible for it to bulge up and leak, as there is virtually no gap between the plastic top and the alloy body. If the plastic top was cracked enough for the O ring to bulge, there would be a massive fountain of oil from the crack.
I suspect either the O ring was not in the correct groove, or not lubricated before fitting, so it has been dislodged as the top was screwed down.
