    Hi all,

Occasionally when I start the car I get a rattling sound from the engine area
I have put up a video clip on youtube VW golf 1.4 tsi 2009 noise when engine starts - YouTube
I have been notified that the shocks need replacing, otherwise it drives fine. Could this be related or a different matter?

Any ideas what it could be?

    Thanks

Are they on timing chains? I have a diesel which is on a belt, but i didn't really think VAG cars came on chains ever.

I think mk6 Golfs with the TSI petrol engine have a timing chain; diesels have a timing belt.

The problem seems to be with the timing chain tensioner. If you Google 'VW tsi engine timing chain tensioner failure' you find loads of information. Some mk6 GTI owners over on Golf GTI forum have replaced their timing chain tensioners as a preventative measure - there's lots of information on that forum about this issue.

i know that petrol is on a timing chain, why would the timing chain make a sound for a few seconds and then settle thereafter?

after watching the videos on here http://www.adamlewin.co.uk/vw-mk5-go...chain-problem/
the sound I get from the engine sounds exactly the same as this video > the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6L3fF49OT8
especially after turning the engine off and then on again the noisy sound doesn't come back again

If the oil is draining out of the hydraulic tap pets when the car has been stood a few hours, you get a load tappet noise when the engine is started from cold, after a few seconds the oil pressure refills the tappet and silences things down again. As said the timing chain noise would be constant I would have thought..
live heard it on other cars years ago, but haven't had it personally. Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Probably worth a read of this, which explains it much better than I can.

It's definitely the chain causing that noise, I had the same problem round about this time last year. If you leave it like that the risk is the chain will jump a cog and wreck the engine.
