Never had a car with CC do that before....
I noticed that a few years ago. 1st time it happened was on the M5 heading s/b south of Bristol where the motorway goes downhill and the car decided to slow itself down.

I've got used to it now and use it everyday when driving through roadworks.

Yeah, I believe it can use engine braking too...theres a wier I drive through on the way home from work and have the cruise control on at 50 (its a SPECs area unfortunately)...as soon as the car starts to go over about 52mph the car brakes itself and gets you back to 50. I often wonder if the brake lights are actually applied when its doing this...

The brake lights come on if the cars speed is being reduced by a certain amount of meters per second. I've followed the mrs before and although she can feel the car slowing the brake lights were not on on some occasions. I can't remember exactly how many m/s it has to be before they come on but it is published somewhere.

I've always wondered about the brake lights thing. Puts me off using cruise sometimes. As I think I must look like a right idiot braking on a motorway with a slight decline with nothing infront for miles!

I remember one time I was driving along the motorway and noticed some 'idiot' braking regurarly on a clear road. Only when I started using the cruise on my car did I realise said person was probably using the cruise control function on their car.
