The symptoms are a vibration felt through the steering wheel at 70+ mph, lasting for 30 secs then disappearing for 90 secs, where everything is smooth, before returning for another 30 secs.

Just had my wheels refurbished by Platinum Alloys in Swindon and the intermittent steering wheel vibration was present before they did the wheels. I was hoping the refurb would cure the problem. I mention the refurb as I hope I can rule out any wheel imperfections or wheel balancing issues. The tyres are not top spec, but are in good condition.

Anyone provide suggestions where to look next?

    Thanks.

Try the spare wheel if it is balanced as substitute for front wheels
Check for wear in steering links, suspension.
    Have tracking carried out.

Thanks, not sure I want to check the space saver at 70+. I'll look at the steering and tracking, but why would the vibration come and go every 2 mins?

I should add that the car is an 08 plate with only 37k miles on the clock.

With only those miles, wear is unlikely a problem.
The front wheels / tyres would be the first to eliminate as a cause before looking elsewhere.
Does this vibration come and go when a steady speed 70+ is maintained ,or is the car slowed down when vibration is evident.(just for info.)

    Michael,

The vibration comes and goes when at a steady 70+ speed and will disappear if you slow below 70. I have just rotated the wheels front to back to see if this eliminates any interaction between the front wheels.
