I had a similar fault in my Golf IV many years ago, which was eventually traced to a faulty ignition switch - it would suddenly fail to recognise the key and cut the engine as it thought it was being stolen!

Funny you should mention ignition switches.
GM have had a huge problem with ignition switches in the USA. I have no idea who makes their switches, but the rush to cut costs is a global thing. I have wondered whether VW Group could be using the same supplier, or the same technology.
However, there are so many sensors and other things that can go wrong, that ignition switches is just one of many possibilities.

This is almost certainly not the same 150bhp engine coming to the Golf for a number of reasons.

The new 1.4 engines are designed for the MQB platform and the MQB Ibiza has not yet been released. Also the Ibiza 1.4 150PS engine has been in production since 2009 so would appear not the same as the new 1.4 engine available in MQB platform cars. This is probably why your car was not involved in the gearbox oil recall either.

SEAT Ibiza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EDIT: The Seat Ibiza now has the EA211 (new VW group) engine but is the 1.4 140PS like the one I have in my Golf. The 150PS 1.4 engine has only just started production for VW Golf and Audi A3 and is changed to be EURO6 emission compliant. I think you have the old 1.4 because the emissions are listed as 139gCO2/km which is way out of range for an EA211 engine, especially considering the 1.4 GT Golf does 110gCO2/km with the same gearbox.

The issue with GM was simply not using a long enough spring in the ignition. It was nothing to do with supplier or technology. They knew about the problem for 10 years and did nothing.

    Dan,
that is strange. The engine in the Ibzia is a 110kw/148 bhp/150ps engine. That's in the log book and the invoice. It is NOT the 140. But it's CO2 is listed as 139. In all other ways, the spec matches the TSI in the Golf.
The dealer told us it was the same engine as the Golf, but the CO2 difference raises a question........and anyway, the dealer was not an engineer.
When we bought it, (June 13) it was about 8 months old, (first reg 09/12) and was chased down by our dealer who found it in the Seat Corporate fleet. My daughter had been looking for a powerful dsg.
Maybe it was a prototype on the way to developing the other engine, maybe it was some other one off..............I can only speculate.

I think the 1.4 150PS engine that was in the Ibiza is a detuned version of the 180PS twincharger engine that was found in the Polo GTI and Ibiza Cupra, and with 160PS in the Mk.6 Golf and the Sirocco (and others, I'm sure). It wasn't available with a manual in the Ibiza- just like the 180PS engine wasn't either.
    2002 Polo 9n 1.2 65PS. Basic but it's better than the train!
