Get GAP Insurance from someone like gapinsurance123.co.uk. Much cheaper and you can defer first year as most car policy do full replacement if car is written off in first year so GAP not necessary. With iPhone4 you will need a separate data SIM (assuming you have Audi Connect as without it no need for Data connection) such as the one from 3

I can confirm Audi will do it under warranty, if they moan just show them your current version and give them the part number for the new version, they cant dispute there isn't an update then.

Try another dealership if your having problems.

The trick is to "bamboozle" the front of house staff with "tech" then they should get you to speak to someone from the workshop, I got a very helpful guy who knew about updates and sorted it all out for me.

Just need to get past the ignorant to the ones that know what your talking about.

I am not sure there is a definitive answer to this. They did eventually upgrade mine, but I had to demonstrate a reason, ie a fault. My original reason was because the ipod wasn't sometime recognised, but I also wanted the dual data sim sorted. That in it self is not a good enough reason for them to upgrade it for you. It was a lot of hassle convincing them to do the update, kept saying not applicable to my car. I gave them the part number of the update, but even when I spoke to parts department about this, who weren't aware of my motives, they couldn't confirm what cars it was applicable to. They wouldn't sell the sd card update (circa £28) saying it was a 'tool' rather than a part, so would only sell to the service department or another recognised garage. All in all it has been a very frustrating process. The front of house know less than I do on this subject, but the manner in which they explain why it can't be done is sometimes bordering on condescending.

On another issue, my car is due back a 3rd time for a gearbox cooler valve issue. VCDS is still showing a fault, but they are adamant it is fixed. Every time I speak with them I get a different story, which is not confidence building. They also damaged my door card (and tried to conceal it) when doing the door seal repair. They have replaced it, but I now have a screw cover missing. Shambolic is the only word to describe the experience, every visit results in another visit required. I also have a BMW and my experience with them is much better, servicing is cheaper, and they do more on the vehicle check other than measure tyre depths and quote ludicrous prices for new tyres. My BMW had the disc thickness noted. They were at 24.1mm, the limit being 24, so I knew I would soon need new discs, which I do myself. No such measurement taken by Audi. When I asked about this they said it was a visual check. But how can they do that accurately to say 0.1mm?

Hi everyone.... as with everyone here I am in the same boat as you.

I picked up my 2012 A6 Avant at the weekend and am having the exact same issue with the iPhone / SIM when trying to get data.

Just wondering what everyone's suggestions are for me trying to get my local Audi to accept that I need the update applying with the least amount of pain ? I did ask the garage to ensure the latest update was applied before I collected the car but they just said they didn't really understand what was needed.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also if there is anyone in Exeter with a VCDS and likes to share their skills please let me know !

    I think I need help

I got my car upgraded today to the 770 software (free of charge) . I took the (data only supposedly) SIM out of my iPad, put it in a holder, popped it in the dash SIM slot (with no other phone in the car) and it was recognised, a single signal strength meter appeared and I could connect to the internet.

Hurrah! I thought. Took my Samsung Note 3 phone out to the car. Historically, it connected to the car via a Bluetooth pairing (and historically it had worked fine) allowing internet access and phone to/from the car. It did not register in the car, with only one signal strength meter showing (for the in-dash SIM?).

I tried rebooting the MMI - no change. I started/stopped/exited the car multiple times. No luck. On my Telephone setting screen, the option to "Make Calls Using" is not shown. It is as if, once the SIM card was entered in the dash, the bluetooth connected phone becomes invisible to the car - even though the phone and car say they are paired.

Could I ask (firstly) did others have to use a VCDS to access hidden menus to get the update to work (as posted by Westyfield2) and (secondly) how do others connect their phone to the car when the SIM is in the dash? It may be that bluetooth pairing is not the right way. Any other ideas you have I would greatly appreciate.

    Many thanks in anticipation,

    Michae

TBH I'd be getting stroppy with the dealer. The agreement was for the car at xx price with xx updates done. Refuse to collect the vehicle until that agreement is met. Even if the salesman doesn't understand what the updates mean, the technical guys in the workshop will. Heck, you could even show them the software version screen in the vehicle and then walk them over to a newer vehicle in the showroom and lookup its version.

In terms of things to ask for to persuade them, as-well as this thread the MMI updates are designed to improve compatibility with latest Bluetooth phone handsets, fix random crashes in the MMI system, and they improve the sound if you've got Bose.

From what I know, the green menu steps to enable “NAD operation mode” cannot be skipped and must be completed for the proper method of SIM for data + Bluetooth Phone for calls to work.

Certainly, for me, this seems to be the case. There have been some posts which say the Option appeared immediately after the 770 update without any VCDS changes, Have used the link you sent to contact a local VCDS owner. Hopefully I will get a useful reply.

Does making changes via VCDS invalidate warranties?

FYI, the use of VCDS to unlock the hidden green engineering menu only needs to be done once. Once the hidden green engineering menu has been unlocked, you can always access it again later via the CAR and MENU buttons. However it is highly recommended that you stay out of the menu after following these instructions - if you go making other changes in the green menu without understanding what they do it can cause quite a lot of problems, especially with the bootloader!

Good question... to which I don't know the answer. FYI, most things that Audi dealers do these days with their computer will mean that your VCDS changes get reset. For example I've used VCDS to enable foglights as cornering lights (see here), and had to redo the VCDS changes as it got reset when the car was last at the dealership.
