replying to my own thread, I have software version 0612 at present which according to the list here, is a 3G+ firmware CarFreak's Blog: Übersicht Audi MMI 3G / 3GP / MMI Plus Software-Versionen, also means I only have to do 2 updates.

Got the car back today, Service won't update, and parts won't sell me the update disc/SD card (Sytner).

I have these screens which suggests update is straightforward, but has anyone else done this? I have downloaded the update firmware, but is the file structure just normal windows folders, ie I just copy the downloaded files/folders to a disc and burn, or are they ISO discs, ie i use something like imgbrn to create an ISO disc as I have done previously for BMW's.

I've been paying close attention to this topic, having been waiting for this (necessary) update since I picked my car up last April.

When I saw this thread, I sent the link straight to my local Audi garage and asked for the update, to which they replied with what appears to be the standard response of 'no approved retro fit for this option/upgrade from Audi'.

I then took it to Audi UK, who were clueless, to be honest. They tried feeding me a line about my hardware (tech pack and mobile high) not being appropriate for the upgrade because my aerial can't cope with the dual interface of a SIM and a phone, which is utter gibberish, from a technical point, and further demonstration that they are either fools (or assume I am).

Anyway, I then sent a further mail to my local garage saying, politely, that I would expect an enhancing software upgrade to arrive for free and swiftly if it was for my phone, computer or even TV but why am I being denied an update that clearly exists for the most expensive 'gadget' I own - my car?

The surprise came this week when I got a phone call from one of the gents at the dealers who said that they are unable to simply upgrade the software without a reason, as the Audi database must reflect the software of the car so they can not just change things without justification or record. He then brilliantly followed up with a loaded question about whether I am having any problems with my MMI: perhaps it is freezing up and they need to update it via the warranty? I, of course, said yes and they booked it in to have the MMI looked at and updated to the latest software to eliminate any stability issues that could be causing my 'issue'.

End result: just picked it up from the dealers with the latest update, free of charge - and they washed it! Meeting a local gent this evening with a VCDS kit so that he can enable the hidden menu and I hope to be able to run data from a sim and calls from my phone by the end of the day. Bye bye Samsung Galaxy, hello new iPhone!

I guess the moral of the story is to make it as easy as possible for your dealers. Give them a paper trail to justify the update to Audi and they have no reason not to accommodate you. They can't argue with a nondescript MMI issue and a software update is almost always going to be the proposed cure, as the programmers will have resolved any potential issues with the latest software version and the dealers will be aware of this - it's the easiest fix for them. You don't even need to tell them why you want the update.

    Hope this helps somebody.

Are you sure you need to anything with VCDS? From what others have said this should enable phone + SIM out of the box with no need for any hidden menus

True - mine enabled SIM/BTHF selection as soon as the update 0770 was applied, no menus required.

Tempted to find someone with a VCDS to enable Needle Sweep for me though

All the earlier posts reference the need for the hidden menu option to be ticked if this default was not on your car from the start (May 2013 build onwards). It certainly isn't coming up as an option yet. I'll sort it tonight.

Incidentally, I used the VCDS to add needle sweep, beep to lock, directional lights and the lap timer option on the computer - all cool but the beep to lock is worth the time. No more wondering if it clicked as you walk away.

I tend to just watch the lights when locking, I do like the idea of the beep, but then it would make it less stealthy ... as stealthy as something 5.2m long gets anyway!

Just need to find someone with VCDS now, can't believe the main dealers can't even do this for you anymore.. crazy stuff

To get access to Green Hidden menu, you need to use VCDS. If you already have access to the Green Hidden menu, you'll probably find it gets disabled when Audi do the software update, and you'll need to re-enable access in VCDS.
Hi, my 62 plate A6 Allroad was in today for the update but despite assurances that the knew what they are doing, NAD operation mode was not enabled. Neither is the button press for the hidden engineering menu. What is VCDS? Is this free software or paid for and I presume I need a special cable to plug in to the car somewhere?

Many thanks for the great guide on how to get it going!

VCDS is a software and cable offering from RossTech that allows you to analyse and make changes to the inner most workings of your car. It costs abut £250 to buy but many members on this forum will make changes to a fellow member's car for a few beer vouchers. Find a post from Chris_A6 and follow the link in his signature to find a member near you with VCDS
