    Hi Guys,

I'm just getting used to the car at the moment, used to have a manual petrol - so this is probably just how it is, but how quickly should the car be picking up?

I'm thinking more of getting off the line quickly - there seems to be a bit of delay in hitting the throttle, auto-clutch engaging and the car moving off - A little lairy on some juctions - although once going it's off!

Just want to check the car I've just bought doesn't need a new clutch!

    Thanks

    Rob

It's not exactly like launching the space shuttle if you leave it in auto and try to sprint off the line. Audi quote a decent 0-60 time for the 2.5tdi but I can't believe that this is for the multitronic doing its own thing. I got sandbagged at the lights many a time until I figured out how to get it going.

Try dropping the lever across into manual and it will set off with a lot more verve.

Don't forget to change up 1/2 way around the roundabout (or just drop it back into auto) or you will tear round with the engine wailing like a banshee until it hits the red line and changes up itself.

It shouldn't be a clutch problem but beware the ££££ if it is. It is a 6 plate unit (7 on later cars) and costs a bomb to replace.

Or drop it in S which make the gear box respond quicker

They must have changed it then!

No "S" position on my multitronic. You only used to get it on the Tiptronic slush box on the quattro and on the big engines, too powerful for multitronic.

You also get it on the VW DSG box but it doesn't make the gearbox any faster, it just holds lowest gear whenever possible and sharpens up the throttle response. It scares the barnacles off me if I engage it by accident on the Golf and squirt out at a roundabout.

What do you call the "slush" box?

I thought Rob had the CVT like mine and I have a S position on lever which make the box respond faster and or the accelerator respond quicker too!

Okay, here's the details. Pay attention.

Dark skies reckons that he has a 2002 2.5tdi Avant 155bhp. So do I, from new. It's the "old" shape. The model was changed the month after I got mine to be 163bhp, so it's highly likely that our cars are very similar. They might even be the same colour.

The 2002 A6 was available with two auto transmissions.

The multitronic was on the smaller petrols and diesels, up to the 2.5tdi (non quattro). Multitronic is based on the old "rubber band" gearbox pioneered by Daf in the 1970's. it has a 6 plate hydraulic clutch, later changed to 7 plates because of problems with them buring out. It was promoted by Audi as having the same performance and fuel economy as a manual gearbox.

All of the big engines, plus the 2.5tdi quattro had an old fashioned "slush box", by which I mean a conventional auto with a torque converter, brake bands and planetary gears. They typically hit the performance and use about 15% more fuel. Audi added a manual overide option - so called "Tiptronic" and these had an "S" option on the gearchange. They also had a torque converter lockup clutch to save a bit of fuel when cruising. The power-sapping effect of a slush box explains why the 2.5tdi quattro got an extra 25bhp over the more efficient multitronic gearbox. (170bhp).

I drove both before I bought. I liked the extra umph from the quattro, but couldn't put up with the gearbox. I loved the multitronic.

The multitronic didn't have an "S" option in 2002. Maybe it came later, or on the new model or maybe not at all. Here's a picture of the gearchange from the 2002 brochure. Note the abscence of an "S".

I couldn't be rrrrrrrrsed to look up your profile to see what model and year you have, but like I said, they might have changed it and yours might be newer.

    Wha d ya have?

    Hi Teflon/Jack,

It's a 2002 A6 Avant SE 2.5TDI Multitronic with 155Bhp (CVT box). - Just to confuse matters - it does actually "Appear" to be a facelifted shape (***!) but def has the 155 engine - I think they facelifted and then changed the 2.5TDI a couple of months later. (I could be wrong).

There isn't a sport option on the gearbox - I know there's one on the Tiptronic (5 speed auto) & I've heard of people mentioning a sport mode one on later models of the CVT.

I believe it has the 6 plate clutch (unless someone can tell me otherwise) - Audi can neither confirm or deny this.

The "problem" (which probably isn't actually a problem) I'm getting is:

    i) On moving off (quickly), there is quite a delay between hitting the throttle and all hell breaking loose. (could be normal?)

ii) I'm having difficulty finding a balance between the above and moving off slowly/normally (revs = 1200rpm) - as I adjust the pressure on the throttle, I think the Multitronic thinks "ah he doesn't want to move off" and puts the clutch back in.

I think it's probably just me getting used to it and trying to use the throttle as I would in a manual (balancing and adjusting it against the clutch).

Just wanted to check what to expect.

I'm putting a warranty on it with a per-item limit of £5K and cover for clutches, gearboxes and wear and tear items. It's £300/year. <-- Just in case!

    Cheers!

    Rob

I have an A6 2.5TDi SE 2004 53 plate and as far as i know the CVT gearbox
    6 speed with D and S
I am not sure about which version of the engine I have buu i think it's the 163bhp version. (how can I find out?)

regarding the picture attached, it is the same with an S at after the D.

    Hi Jack,

As a 2004 model you'll probably have the 163Bhp version, with the Sport mode on the CVT and a 7 plate clutch. (If it's a 6 speed and you can't hear it change gear when accelerating (ie the revs don't rise and then suddenly fall when it changes as with a manual) then you have a CVT.

    Cheers

Looks like that sorts it all out then. We're all correct!

    Rob,

The symptoms you describe are exactly as mine has been for all 5 years - hence the advice to slot it in manual. I've never found a reliable way to fool it into getting off the mark in auto. I've often taken rush-hour roundabouts in manual. It's the only drawback to a fabulous piece of kit.

    Jack,

The difference in the two gearchanges is (or was in 2002), like this photo:

I guess they've played with the electronics a bit on the newer cars and added the sport option.
