does anyone drive under normal use with this off? ive always kept it on, never even experimented with it. any benefits to not using it, more power/acceleration? or does it not work like that?

    cheers

switch it off and try it, its just like driving used to be. its the first thing i switch off when getting into a car that has it, along with any other electronic aids, like abs, if they can be switched off. i fitted an abs switch to mine so i can get rid of it, stop much quicker without it.

Doesn't make any difference - all that the traction / stability control does is dab the brake on the relevant wheel(s) to rein it back in. Given that the Quattro practically never breaks traction then it makes nil difference day to day. The only times the traction control has kicked in on mine have been in the snow. Well, other than that one time that I floored it coming out of corner and realised that I was in 3rd and not 5th.

I occasionally switch mine off in snow (or I did in the Passat as we've not had snow since I got the A4), simply because I trust my judgement more than the cars under those conditions; the Passat was a bit like Bambi in the snow.

Turning off traction control makes a big difference to the pull-off power in first gear, other than that it keeps you on the road ;-) In fact, on my car if you press the button quickly it says that it goes into sports mode, holding down the button turns it off even more.

You've got to hold the button down for a few seconds to fully turn it off. Just pressing it once keeps some of it on still
