I am on the verge of ordering a Mk7 2.0 TDI DSG SE 5dr with parking sensors and mirror pack. Price quoted is a little more than I wanted to pay (leasing - is a company car) I can save £11 per month by not getting metallic, don't like the red so does anyone have any opinions on the Black and the Urano Grey.

Also the DSG gearbox is costing £12 per month, I do prefer autos but if someone believes that the manual is better for any reason I would be interested in their opinions.

The only other way I could save money is going for the 1.6 TDi but a lot of my driving is motoway so worried that I may find it a bit sluggish. I think that the 1.4 122 is roughly the same lease price so not really a worthwhile option.

Many thanks for any help that can be given.

If most of your time is spent on the motorway, a DSG box is pointless no?
Better to get a manual box that you'll hardly use and spend it on something you will IMHO.

I moved from a 2.0 140 TDI Skoda Octavia L&K with a manual gearbox to my present 1.6 TDI Golf PLus SE two and a bit years ago, and find that the DSG box seems to make up for the loss of power in going from the 2.0TDI to the 1.6 TDI. Even on motorways, you are often slowing down for roadworks and congestion so the DSG's instant reaction in dropping down a gear to help you accelerate is very useful. This is my first automatic gearbox for many many years, and I am completely sold on it now. Admittedly, I seldom have a car full of passengers, but it copes well with 2 of us and a boot full of luggage. I suggest you find a dealer with a car you can take for a test drive.

quick question, without wanting to derail the thread.

If you're slowing down for standing traffic and/or roadworks(?) on a motorway, why would you need an instant gear change to accelerate?

Because even on the M1, the roadworks and jams do end eventually???

I understand that, my question wasn't about the roadworks or jams ending, my question was about why you'd need an instant gear change to accelerate away.

Got my first automatic 12 years ago, which by strange chance was costing me £12 a month on the leasing scheme. Big mistake, I've never gone back. Every time I'm in any sort of traffic I relish not having to be pumping the clutch and clonking about in the first three gears. I just drive.

In bygone days an automatic was a woeful thing.Three speeds, sloppy changes, power sapping, poor mpg and the sort of acceleration that a 2CV would trounce. Those days are gone. The DSG box is excellent, for my money only the Audi multitronic is better. Even the “old fashioned” 7 speed slush box in my Merc is a delight. Throw in start/stop technology and staying with a manual is like buying vinyl records.

There’s now no need to go manual unless you are trying to save money or want to convince yourself, in that youthful way I once did, that you need to be properly in control. You don’t. The DSG is faster, smoother and better than you. If you want to pretend you are Penti Arikula just stick it in manual or use the flappy paddles.

Go for the DSG. But beware..........…it can be life changing.

Company car, high mileage, hit traffic regularly? Buy a DSG.

Your own car that you will have to foot the bill for in years to come? Buy a manual.

In many years and many cars I've never killed a Manual box, some having double the original power fed through them. Autos, I've had half a dozen crap out on non modified cars.
If a modern auto goes in a 5 yr old 120k car, it's borderline right off.

I think what Esh means is that if you're in traffic in a manual you find a gear, usually 1st or 2nd, that enables you to creep along without kangerooing until it's safe to move back up to motorway speeds.

There's no point flooring the car as soon as the jam is clear though? You'll only end up causing another jam when you have to brake to stop yourself driving into the back of the person in front who can't change gears as quickly as your lightening quick DSG box(!)

Having a manual doesn't mean you can't accelerate away it just means you get to depress a pedal with your left foot now and then. It's as good as the operator.

If the OP's journey is mainly motorway there's nothing wrong with a manual but if he's trudging through traffic every single day then an auto is probably going to easier on the clutch/left leg.

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

Going back to the OP questions.
I have found the DSG to be completely addictive.
I love the 2.0 diesel, other than its pathetic mpg
The Urano Grey is OK in the flesh. As you do not have the trade-in price to worry about, drop the metallic but keep the 2.0 and the DSG.
