    Hi,

When you press and hold the middle button on your key fob.. what happens?

I was under the impression that the boot lid would sring open a few inches, making it easy to lift with the gas-filled struts doing the work for you.

I recently bought some new struts (U4B5 827 552G) because my boot dosen't lift an inch when I use the middle button on my keyfob (it does unlock though).

Sadly, this was wasted money as the new struts haven't made any difference, it's still heavy / stiff to lift until the gas strutd take over

Should I oil all the joints, or isn't the boot supposed to "pop" very far much?

    Cheers - Alex.

Mine just release the boot latch and that's it.
I still have to lift the boot to open it.

Grease could be a good idea in the hinge

It should just un-latch the boot (on an Avant) - I'm guessing the same on a saloon.

The struts will have to be super-powerful to push open a boot from that angle because of the sheer weight. Once you start to open the boot, the angle that the struts are at changes and they can help take the weight and open the boot.

Otherwise, it would be much harder to close the boot because you'd be pushing against some very strong struts.

Yep, it just unlatches it, although it took me the first 3 years to figure out that I had to hold the key fob button for several seconds before it works. Before that, I thought the middle button was for saloons only. What a numpty.

Even though it doesn't open by magic, your Avant tailgate shouldn't be stiff or heavy to lift. It should go up pretty much under its own steam with just a bit of encouragement. Maybe the new struts WILL make a difference, or perhaps the hinges need some lube? Or maybe it's an ex-drug dealer car with 10Kg of something unsavoury stuffed in the tailgate......?

If you want the fully auto opening experience the only options are to go to a disabled vehicle modifier or blow £60k on a Pheaton or a few bob more on a Bentley. The car is a bit more up market, but it's the same key! Neither are as much use for shifting big stuff around.

Alternatively spec your next A6 for the remote unlock and opening tailgate about £400

    Thanks for your responses.

So it pops up 's like everybody else's then.. that's a relief, but the boot is quite stiff to lift.

Would it be a good idea to spray the joints with WD40 to loosen them up and then add grease a few days later? (I guess WD40 is no good for long term lubrication).

What type of grease should I use please, any brand in particular?

    Cheers - Alex.
