The mechanic jumped in the car with me and suggested to check the wheel bearings, although he instantly mentioned a potential tyre problem as well.
He dropped me home and after an hour or so I got the call that both rear tyres had terrible saw tooth style wearing on the inside. The tyre guy is based next door so I got 2 fresh tyres fitted under warrantee and I could not believe how bad the tyres were that came off the car. They were Semperit but I don't think that that means that they are a bad tyre. Anyway, problem solved!

Saw tooth wear is very common on rear of A6. Audi did a 'secret' press release to dealers regarding this.
