    Hi all,

My Passat (06 registered) has been in the family since new. Full service history been kept in immaculate condition etc etc,

It's just had it's 60,000 mile service by my local VW indie who has made me aware of 'potential' oil pump failure (due to age and mileage) The injectors have been done, so that's another big one out of the way.

My question; Is it worthwhile having the oil pump balance shaft re-engineered. I've found a company in Middlesex who can offer this service?

I've read horror stories on here (the nature of forums i guess!). However, i love the car! The nature of my work means it may have to do 3-400 mile round trips and it just eats miles effortlessly.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Thank you

I know what you mean.....forum's are a great source of knowledge / help, but can also create anxiety and worry for problems you didn't know existed!

For what it's worth, I have an 06 2.0TDi PD estate that has just covered 132,000 miles (I've done 52k of these in the past 4 years). Injectors were done 2 years ago. Never had an issue with, or paid any attention to the oil pump / drive. Mine has the gear type drive with the hex shaft....but seems to keep running fine.

What I do with mine is - Use a decent PD spec oil and change it regularly (10k max). Get the cambelt done with water pump and coolant every 80K. Drive it and don't worry.

That's virtually what my Indie said. I am already doing an oil change yearly. It's due some belts this year...

    Thanks Rich :-)

You can get the hex shaft replaced at a reasonable cost and check what state its in.Also you could fit a oil pressure gauge for a small cost to keep an eye on it.

The oil pump failure is nothing to do with changing the oil on a regular basis, as stated the hex key wears badly so doesn't drive the chain to drive the pump hence the oil pressure fault, I've been through this issue cost me near on £1200 took turbo out new oil pump & balance shaft also had cam belt done at same time, there's a guy in sheffield that recons the oil pump balance shaft module for £500 any decent indie will know all about this problem! They say the pump & balance shaft fails between 85-150k miles
