    GOLF MkIV 1.6 16V (X '2000)

Need some help with my golf which smokes from cold intermittently.

A little of the car's history first, it's long winded but it'll give you the whole picture. Ok, here goes:

Timing belt snapped whilst doing 70MPH on the motorway.Apparently due to a faulty tensioner. Engine repaired, replacing cambelt, tensioner, water pump, and all 16 valves (12 were damaged). Cost £1008 (Ouch!!!)

Since the repair I've had no end of trouble, using VAG-Com diagnosed faults:

    1) Engine Management Light : Faulty Lambda Sensor
Replacing the sensor fixed this error code. (Lambda Sensor £130)

    2) Engine Management Light : EGR Fault
16786 - EGR System: Excessive Flow
    P0402 - 35-00 - -
(Suspect clogged up EGR valve ?)

    3) Burns oil, sometimes in the mornings smokes from exhaust for a few minutes, then clears. Only on cold engine startups. Have also noticed recently, even after engine has warmed up that when I accelerate hard with engine under load I get a puff of smoke from exhaust (like a diesel).

Have removed the spark plugs and two of them were fouled with oil.

    4) Also there's a rattle noise coming from the engine area when accelerating, seems to be getting worse. Doesn't happen all the time, ok when throttle pressed lightly.
Don't know if this is related.

Apart from that, car runs fine (lol).

Any info or thoughts would be much appreciated, before I have to bite the bullet and take it in to the garage.

I wonder if the cylinders that are oiling up have the four 'undamaged' valves. If oil is getting into the engine down the valve stems it could cause all of your problems including the lambda and the EGR.

But, all 16 valves were replace as a precaution.

Could it be that the pistons and/or piston rings could be damaged ?

    or

Is it more likely to be the valve seals ?

    How could I tell ?

Is there a way I could narrow it down ?

    So many Questions ?!?

    Thanks.
