do they come with cruise control as standard or was it an option

sure I read some ads that they did

I think it was an option but it is relatively simple to fit. The kit (harness and witch) is 3B0 998 527 C and costs £65 inc. VAT from any VAG dealer and you need to go into the engine ECU using VAG-COM to login and enable the cruise function. Some I have done have already been enabled. It is an easier install than a Golf 4 as well. The only tricky part is not disturbing the steering angle sensor whilst the wheel is off.

    this item @ £47.46 + vat

if the ecu cruise function is enabled already does the cruise work OK once the stalk is fitted or is it best to have it checked out @ a service centre?

If "G" (for "Geschwindigkeitsregelanlage", literally “Speed control governor”) is present at the end of the ECU identification then the cruise will work immediately. Otherwise it takes minutes to enable IF you have the equipment like VAG-COM but it must be a full and registered version of VAG-COM or it won't work.

As an example, if one of my customers fitted their own stalk/wiring and asked me to enable the cruise, I would charge £25 ish which is a standard fault code read charge.
