no probs jim, didn't think you were having a pop, but yes you do see many rusted vags around. i had a seat coledoiza ? in this week this week that had rust coming through on the body under the rear windows, not good for an 05 plate really, and the galaxy/sharan etc have a few cases of rotten chassis, where rust was banished 20 years ago, its now coming back. still, i like welding.

OP, sorry for going off track a little

Zollaf - To be honest I don't necessarily thgink that the rust issues we're seeing on the VW's right now are a major issue, of course, we'd all rather they weren't there, but unfortunately they are.

The problem is how VW are handling these issues IMO

Unlike Toyota who have some problems, they stand up and shout out, yes we have problems, bring your car to us and we will resolved for you immediately if not sooner for no charge. Its our fault not yours and you shouldn't have to pay for it.

VW - hmmmm, could be thid, could be that, has it been painted before, its a 3 year warranty, its actually a mechanical fault and not a paint issue, so please go away and stop bothering us.

VW really need to change their approach.

This was just something easy for me to tackle myself but there are rust spots on front arches and a little on the bottom of the doors, arches will probably be replaced unless they can be repaired effectively.

What do you think of my suspension here, is it ok to just strip this back and coat it or is it time to replace completely?

It is in the back of my mind that it would be good to freshen up the suspension to tighten the handling up a bit, but at the same time I don't want to spend a huge amount on it right now.

    thats not rust ???
well it is, but just a little surface rust, nothing to worry about. find a ford focus somewhere, 02 reg or so and have a look under it, thats rust.
well, you could just leave it, or to put you mind at rest paint something on it, either some waxoil or some paint again.

That and salty roads after the winter. Local garage near me always has an underbody cleaning service advertised once the council ceases gritting operations in the spring. Up on the lift and a quick spray with a (toned down) power washer for a tenner.
