Last service the garage commented on the state of these, I'm not sure if it would be a problem come MOT time.

I decided to remove them and clean them up and recoat them, had some Hammerite in the shed so that will do for now.

    Before

    After

Happy enough with the first one. The fastners were badly corroded so had to drill then use bolt extractor to get them out.

Yes really bad with rust luckily not bad enough to have weakened to plate too much, looked fine after cleaning it up with a metal brush attachment on the drill.

More concerned with the suspension strut as that is quite corroded too.

merely there to help stop stuff hitting the discs. not checked as part of the mot so not a problem there. me, i would have left them until they fell off, then not done anything about it. but they do look good painted, shows you love your car.

Mine were like that, also the hubs, so I'm picking up some hubs to refurbish this week.

The more I look at VW , the more I see posts on rusty wings, rusty tailgates, rusty calipers, rusty hubs/ dust shields etc as well as experiencing them on my Passat and seeing them in real life on many other cars.

I'm not saying other vehicles don't also experience this to some degree, but VW seem to be particularly prone to it?

So much for VW top build quality etc.............makes you wonder a little?

jim, its because you look at a 15 year old vag and see some rust. what you don't see are many other 15 year old cars. how many x type jags are scrapped due to rotten sills. how many 8 year old ford focus' are rotten underneath. the problem is, vw used to make their cars too well so they lasted too long, and to rustproof something makes it more expensive to recycle. the ultimate in rustproofing is galvanising, like my 80, but galv is incredible hard to recycle. thick underseal, not a lot that can be used for, plus people don't keep their car that long and in todays throw away society where people buy new cars they can't afford on finance ( small deposit required, £180 per month , you just pay for fuel but will never own the car) and places like webuy any car .com devalueing used motors, they just don't need to be well built, especially when the slightest tap or some missing seats see's the insurance company deem it uneconomical to repair and it gets scrapped.

Zollaf - I'm not having a pop at VW by any means, had the Passat and loved it still have the A6 and love that too.........

Just saying that there are many many issues with rust as posted here and all over the internet and other forums.

To be fair, I think some of it is down to owners maintenance, both in terms of actual mechanical maintenance and also cleaning
