We could probably do with knowing what car it's on (engine code is always good).

Do you mean fault code 01423? The Ross-Tech wiki tells you that it could be wiring, or it could need its basic settings or adaptation sorting out. See the page here.

Do the garage know what they're doing for basic settings? Are they a VAG specialist?

If they don't, then C&R Enterprises are just 30 miles away from Leicester.

Get a second opinion from another specialist. You could try PMing Crasher to see what he thinks, and like I said, he's not all that far away from you (if the car is driveable)

1200 quid bill or a 30 mile trip to see what crasher at c&r thinks ? at c&r you will get a proper diagnosis, not a random guess.

You are allowed to drive a car without an MOT if en-route to a garage for a pre arranged appointment at a garage for repairs.

You also need to run a diagnostic on your keyboard. Is the little light marked 'caps lock' illuminated? If so, this can be resolved by pushing the button marked 'caps lock' once.
