I need to get to the drivers side headlight bulbs but can't get the air filter box out of the way, it won't come out past the injector pipes. I don't of course intend to start pulling the pipes off so before I do any damage to the box:
    1) The box appears to split in half after releasing the two clips level with the inside edge of the wing, but it won't come apart, perhaps I'm not pulling hard enough?
    2) Do you really have to split the box apart and take it out bit by bit?

On another note, I have successfully replaced the MMI "Memory" button within the console (the actual tactile switch on the PCB, not the external button) which had been rendered inoperative by some sort of fluid spill. If anyone needs any help with this please let me know.

    Cheers

The bottom edge of the right side filter box slots into recesses on the left side, easiest way is to slip a thin bladed screwdriver along the top edge and run it around.

Then the right side will simply lift out if you've disconnected the MAF tubing and moved that out of the way.

It doesn't take much force just some manoeuvring...usually have it all off in under 10 mins

    Hi A6_Chris

Thanks but these vids clearly aren't of a RHD diesel! If only my air cleaner box came out that easy!

You've just got extra engine, everything else is the same and yes you need to split the airbox, don't drop any of the clips.

I did mine this week. As Mark says, disconnect the MAF. I did this by undoing the jubilee clip then pulling the MAF off after releasing the 2 clips. Lay this towards the back of the engine - it's still connected to the wire. After the air hoses are off you can release the 2 clips on the filter housing and pull it off. I also remove the other part to get better access but you may manage without. If you do this then there is a small black pin going toward the wing which need removed then the box pulls out. There is another wire below it which will need to be removed as well. Careful when you take the bulb plastic housing cover off as the bottom bits break easily!! Good luck it's a bit of a nightmare.

Change my DRL yesterday, which is why it was so fresh in my mind.

When taken out/apart take the opportunity to do the following:

    1) Wipe MAF housing, mesh and associated piping (ensuring you use no cleaner on the MAF itself (spray cleaner on a microfibre cloth)
    2) Clean and wipe out filter box interior (removing the foam helf in place by 4 screws...I found lots of dead crawlies & crud under it)
    3) Vacuum out under where the airbox fits using a 2" paint brush to loosen any compacted detritus
    4) Check for any rust or water traps and treat accordingly
    5) Replace your air filter if needed or simply vacuum it if an immediate change isn't necessary
