Cheers Jim, I may take it to my indy to get it flushed & changed if only to rule that out as a first & cheapest possibility.

Nice one Paul, probably only around £40 or so at a guess and as you say, worth doing as the first and probably cheapest step for peace of mind.

My fingers are crossed for you buddy

Brycie, sounds from the colour that someone's mixed fluids which isn't good.

Checked all the previous service invoices since I've owned the car & as you suspecged, pas fluid change isn't listed on any of them. Will be getting that done next week then & let you know if it cures the problem.

It can also go darker/brownish with use/time. Mine was brownish before I changed it (at around 33k) and it was definitely the original fluid.

I had wondered if that may be the case Roy (same as engine oil discolouring). I'm working on the assumption that it's probably still the original fluid as I've not had it changed since buying it with 55,000 on the clock. I'm annoyed at myself for forgetting to ask for it to be done during services. I've had him change everything else including brake fluid & gearbox oil, despite the gearbox supposedly being a 'sealed for life' item - I'd rathrr keep everything fresh.

Car fixed. Turned out to be the drive belt was slipping on full lock. £30 all in, job's a good un!

So you changed the belt or adjusted it?

If changed part no, if adjusted how?

DIY or garage?

Mine sounds like a a knuckle bone being pulled apart and is either side, so may need doing based on your reply brycie!

I'm sorry I don't have the part number, but I do know that it was replaced rather than adjusted. £20 parts, £10 Labour. It was a horrible grinding, knocking, gurgling noise, but there was a squeal to it too, so I should probably have guessed it could have been a belt, what with the squealing and all. If you need me too I can call the garage & get the part number, but remember mine's the 2.0, not the 3.0 engine, so might it be a different belt anyway?
