Well Rick it only happens in 1st gear and pretty much always just after I have started the car up. If I use 1st gear again even a few seconds later... it's fine.

Yesterday, as I was setting off from work, in 1st gear it just wouldn't go over over 1250rpm. Previously I just change into 2nd in that case but instead I put my foot down hard, it 'paused' at 1250rpm for a (very long) second or so but then rushed upto to 1500rpm as normal, at which point I changed up into 2nd.

    1. What is Limp Mode?
    2. How do I find out if it's in Limp Mode?
    3. If it is is Limp Mode... how do I unLimp it?

    1. What is Limp Mode? = ECU goes into safety mode limits engine to protect it
    2. How do I find out if it's in Limp Mode? = it should store a code , ala vagcom

    3. If it is is Limp Mode... how do I unLimp it? = Find the fault and solve it ,

VAG COM'd it and not had any odes stored in ECU other than these two which I have been aware of for a while:
    Address 01: Engine
    Controller: 038 906 019 CJ
    Component: 1,9l R4 EDC 0000SG 1086
    Coding: 00002
    Shop #: WSC 01317
    2 Faults Found:
18080 - Coolant Fan Control 1: Open or Short to Ground
    P1672 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Address 03: ABS Brakes
    Controller: 1C0 907 379 D
    Component: ASR FRONT MK60 0103
    Coding: 0021505
    Shop #: WSC 01317
    1 Fault Found:
00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Front Right (G45)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

I don't know the ins and outs of Limp mode but wouldn't the symptoms be the same through every gear?

    Finally git it sorted.
It was the black T10e plug from the ECU Control/Fuse box that I had left unplugged.

An Upsolute Group remap had been arranged in Rochdale by some of the guys over on uk-mkivs.net

Managed to get the Cuise Control finished and it works a treat. So if anybody around Manchester needs a hand with it then let me know.

    List of things to do
    1. Get Bumper scuffs repaired
    2. Replace ABS sensor
    3. Code new Key
    4. Find something else to do

Hmm, could be few things, garage job definately, but no Engine management warning light, would have thought VAG code reader wouldn't be much good? but not really sure. Could it be the Fuel Pump? That's a bit of guess I'm afraid... Is it only first gear, or all gears?

It wasn't neccessarily 1st gear. It was everytime I started the car up. Even in neutral under no load, it wouldn't go over 1250rpm. I would have to keep the pedal pressed down for 2-3 secnds and then it would just shoot up as normal.

Anyway, all sorted now, and as CBRPAUL said... it was a self inflicted problem.
