I have recently had my faulty Multitronic ECU repaired which I hoped would also cure the rough lumpy idle my car has, but unfortunately it hasn't.

Basically when the car is still the engine stutters and the rev needle bounces from 600rpm to 1000rpm, however if I put the Multitronic box into Neutral 'N' the problem isn't quite as bad.

When the engine finally reaches normal operating temperature the problem isn't too obvious but there is still a faint stutter that can be felt in the car when stationary.

I've been told it could be a timing issue as a result of a recent timing belt replacement, I've also been told it could be related to a faulty EGR or faulty injectors.

Incidentally the car does have the worn DMF which results in a rough noisy start of the engine when hot, it's been suggested this may also be causing the rough lumpy idle.

Any ideas where I should look first?

Can anyone offer any advice? I must say I'm hugely disappointed with the 2.0TDI unit. Compared to diesel units in other cars I've owned, namely a BMW derived 2.0 in a Rover 75 and a Ford/PSA 2.2 unit in a Citroen C5, the Audi is very unrefined.

On the other hand the 2.7TDI V6 in my other A6 is excellent.

Age? Miles? the 2.7 will be smoother cos it's a v6 lump, much more refined. My old 2.ltr Passat sounded like a taxi at idle.

It's getting worse! It was so lumpy, jumpy today that the engine cut out.

Time to get it to a good Audi specialist or Audi themselves.

I'm off to Tunisia soon so leaving it at VAG Bolton for a week. Whatever happens I ain't paying a penny because I've only owned the car since late December and the fault has been present all the time.
