Hi - long time no see everyone!

I come back when i have a problem - sorry!

My friend has replaced the thermostat on my A3. Following this, the temperature gauge is still not really working, it normally hovers at around 75 still (same as before he replaced it) and it made it up to 90 once when i was doing a little motorway driving.

Since he's done this it is drinking my diesel at an alarming rate, much more than usual.

    Any ideas what's wrong?

Am just fed up with it now, it's cost me a lot of money the last few months in repairs so i just want rid really but at the same time i don't because i've spent so much repairing it and might end up buying another that also needs work doing

    Hi Lis.

Did you replace your tyres yet?

If it's still underheating, then the new thermostat must be faulty.
Which of the following is it:
    - A genuine one
    - One from a reputable car parts supplier (GSF/ ECP / etc)
    -A cheap one from ebay

The other possibility is that it's the coolant temp sensor that's broken.

My front tyres were replaced November i think.

He gets the parts from the same place as his work get them from so i should imagine they are fairly genuine.

The sensor? That was replaced yesterday and then it seemed fine temporarily and ran at 90. Then later on it ran at 60 and seemed even worse than before then today the red warning light came on so I called the aa who said either water pump or head gasket. Now its abandoned at garage :-( :'(
Unlikely to be water pump I think as only had that done a year ago :-(

same problem only gauge goes up two notches, its been a while from I was on here. Im having a issue with temp qauge on 1.9tdi asv I drive about 12-15 miles and it raises two notches about centre, when I put on the heater fan it slowly falls back to normal running temp, and remains there unless I ture the fan off again. New timing belt rollers and tentioners fitted 20k ago along with a new water pump with iron impellor, car has 150,000 mile Im the only owner and change the oil filter every 10k I have a feeling it might be the thermostat, because there is no loss of coolant or oil in water, water in oil.have you any ideas? thanks!!!!

    CTS or thermostat.

CTS is cheaper and easier to DIY.

Edit: There really is no need to edit your old posts and post your question more than once.

I would think the thermostat is faulty, partially or not fully opening as needed

Having replaced the thermostat and the sensor I have actually come to the conclusion its the instrument cluster itself now.
Is your fuel gauge out too?

Hi Liz, thanks for your reply.. My fuel gauge is fine! No loss of coolant at all, as stated temp gauge raises two notches above centre when driving 12-15 miles.....When heater fan is switched on it drops down to normal and remains there. I am waiting for a good quality German thermostat to arrive so I can rule out sticking/faulty stat. Only other thing it could be is slightly blown head gasget. I think there might be a voltage stabiliser for both gauges in the dash somewhere, could be wrong. Thanks again Liz.
