Hi, of those of you who have already had their first service, anything to look out for? No obvious faults with car, so just the routine fixed mileage oil change I expect.

One question is - should the nav map be updated as part of the service, as I seem to remember that 3 years free updates are included in the purchase price?

Yes the Firmware (Disk) should be covered (make sure you mention it when booking the car in) - keep the forum updated on anything of interest.

Updating maps by the dealer is a tricky one.

Most dealers will refer you to the Navteq website for you to download the free map software updates yourself.
Depending on whether you have Discover Media or Discover Pro it can take some hours downloading then updating the maps so obviously they are not keen to get involved.

Dealers from last November can order in a current maps SD card for your car (probably at your cost though).

Most dealers will not automatically get involved in uploading new firmware by the way unless you have a particular fault/problem that you have raised & they are aware this update corrects that issue.

A technician can be tied up for hours, in some cases, following various pathways for firmware updates.

I will have this out with my local dealer when the car goes in for its first service (April) and read through the documentation that was delivered with the car.

Service done, nothing much to report. Essentially it's just an oil change which would have cost £90 if we hadn't bought the 3yr service plan. They also did a modification to the fuel filler flap under warranty as VW has had reports of some tending to stick, however not previously noticed any problem with it. Only minor dissapointment was that having established that the cars are machine washed and asking them not to do that, they also didn't hoover inside even though I'd said that would be fine.

Didn't bother asking to have the sat nav maps updated as reread the info on the website which makes it fairly clear that you can either update it yourself via t'internet or buy a new SD card from your dealer - fair enough I suppose and a better deal than an update for my A7, for which Audi will ask £250.

JK88: They do a little more for the first service, but not much (visual checks). You'd certainly be paying more than £90 for an oil service at VW delareship rates, so no need to feel ripped off -there's about £55 worth of materials (oil charged at £11 per litre or part thereof, and there's 4.5L of oil in your car, plus the filter), and around 75 mins of billable time which VW pay the dealership at around £40 an hour, but the private customer would be paying around £75 an hour.

Not feeling ripped off at all, just commenting on the cost of the service. The actual invoice was £89.96 (£38 parts inc oil, £37 labour, £15 VAT), although covered by the service plan so nothing to pay.

Interesting ..... Did they check the rear suspension as well as that is a known problem being identified by VW Germany (See other posts on this forum)

download the map you need.... copy files to your sd card... put sd card back in the car....

Not as far as I'm aware. I expect they won't do anything until VW finalises the fix and issues a directive to the dealers. That said, I'm not convinced ours has got noisy rear suspension, but difficult to be 100% sure unless you can compare with another car that is affected.
