Are you on Sky Unlimited or Sky Connect?

I moved into this house 2 years ago & went with Sky Broadband. I recently did a check on www.speedtest.net & it showed that we were getting between 0.5 & 0.9mbps. I all but signed up with BT as they were offering between 4 & 8mbps. Before finally committing however, I called Sky to discuss it & they said 2 years ago they didn't have their own rack in the local exchange & therefore had to lease a rack from BT who limited our speeds at certain times - their customers in that situation have to be put on Sky Connect package. They now have their own rack in the exchange however & were therefore able to switch us to the Sky Unlimited package which they estimated would give us between 5 & 11mbps. On the new package it alsomeans they don't ever limit speeds. We're now getting 5.8mbps every time I check & can nkw download movies, which we couldn't previously.

I also took the opportunity to complain & threaten to leave Sky unless they incentivised us & yet again, they gave us a hefty discount on tv, phone & broadband. I complain about something a couple of times a year & get through to their retention team who always give us discounts to the tune of about £20-£30 per month. I think this time we got free broadband for 6 months &half price tv package & Sky Movies at half price.

I live in a country that is "the digital hub of Europe" that has "a high tech economy" and "connectedness" I live 10 miles from the county town and 30 miles from the capital. My Vodafone speed is .81 on a good day, high contention, copper wire, crap, nonsense service.

As already said there are many variables to broadband speed the biggest is distance from exchange and also line quality, what was the projected speed they told you when you signed up , there are also things you need to check, is the adsl filter the first thing plugged into the socket ,the amount of times I go to a job and find the sky box lead plugged in before the bb is scary, have you tried taking the faceplate off the master socket and plugged directly into the back master socket with just the modem plugged in, how old is the house a lot of older property had multiple telephone sockets wired from the block point where the line comes in causing bridge taps or star wiring which kills broadband speeds , alarm engineers had a terrible habit of wiring the alarm into the rear of the master socket again causing a bridge tap, is the line noisy could be a hr dis on the line that isnt bad enough to show up yet on a line test, my sky broadband has halved in speed twice for a considerable time and I have checked my line end to end and found nothing wrong only for the speed to come back up on its own a couple of months later without explanation, finally sky can provide you with unlimited fibre broadband as they have the same access to openreach's fibre network as bt and anyone else who wants it as it is an open network and we cant give preference to any provider.
If the speed you are getting is considerably lower than expected demand they book you a sfi appointment from openreach or tell them to cancel as they are not providing the service you agreed to ,but check all the above first as they may charge you if we find a problem in the house

Up until August last year I was tied to ADSL with speeds of between 1 - 2MB download.. I suppose that is what happens when you live in a village in the country around 6 miles from the BT exchange.

The exchange is not even on the upgrade plans for fibre...

In August last year following 18 months of emails back and forth a local company installed wireless broadband in the village, these are the speeds I get now, with almost perfect service....

    Now a very happy chap
