P0407 Code

Firstly, Hello from Northern Ireland
i have a VW Passat 1.6 Bluemotion 2010 and it has thrown up this code.
It comes and goes, but now is more often there.
I had the code read and I was told it was the EGR valve. So I took it to get it mapped and the levels that trigger the EGR valve raised so that it wouldn't come on as a fault again.
A day later it was back on. I have also used EGR cleaner and no use.

I bought a Vgate Scanner and the code is coming up as a P0407 $07E8 Generic, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor B Circuit Low

Can someone advise me the right steps to take to sort the problem out.

EGR Potentiometer (G212), Signal too Low

Why would you get the egr values changed by mapping? that doesn't make sense. The error is not about egr flow, it is about an egr mechanical/electrical fault. Change the faulty part.

My limited understanding is that you can go into the programming of the car and either shut the egr valve off or change the values that it kicks in. Hence cost of new egr valve plus 1 1/2 days labour against fiddling with the programme.

What are the thoughts? I would rather ask a daft question than remain in ignorance

I should add, to pitch this at the right level for responses that I will be asking what does this particular egr valve look like, where is it and is the first step to clean it. My mechanical knowledge is very basic, but it am a quick learner!

Your first post said you had used EGR cleaner. The valve is the same one you used the cleaner on. Sorry if that sounds a little sarcastic, I'm struggling for a more sympathetic way to phrase it.

Martin's already given you the best advice. Change the part, or get someone else to do it for you. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap item for your engine (looking at the GSF website), but unless you are planning just to get the car in decent fettle to sell it on, it's the best long term option.

While you're at it, get whatever values have been changed restored to original. If your mechanical knowledge is basic, it's never a good idea to try the automotive equivalent of brain surgery.

Any tuner can change egr values in ecu file but you would still have this error so they would have to code that out too. I doubt they will want to do it for nothing. I suspect that getting the egr part changed will be cheaper.

Teflon,don't worry about the sarcasm, I am prone to a little of it myself

The EGR cleaner was the type that is sprayed into the air inlet on the clean side of the air filter. Hence my question as to point me in the right direction for the EGR valve ( as with different models and manufacturers it looks like it has different shapes and locations )

Some sites talk about cleaning the valve and also checking the connections. I take it that this is worth trying before buying a new valve. Also looking at maybe buying a salvaged valve and putting it on to keep the cost down. Or not bother and put a new one on. If so where is the best place to buy one?

When ai say my knowledge is basic I can find my way round a Haynes or Clymer manual for older motorbikes, but all this newly fangled electronic trickery has me wary


Is there a diagram that will identify the location?

Ok new EGR valve ordered and should be here before the weekend. Even though I have no idea where it is located.
I take it that once I have seen it I will work that out
