    Hi,

    I have a 1998 A4TDi AFN...

after a few weeks of trouble shooting problems with fuel leak, poor starting and flat spots, Finally think I have got to the bottom of it all... The Injector Pump shaft has broken!

Now this seems to match the symptoms but the questions are as follows...

I obviously need a new pump and I understand that they have to be coded to the car but where?

I have had the car remapped and I believe the immobiliser was 'disconnected' is this where the pump would be coded to?

Could I remove the electrical box of tricks from the side of the original pump and place it onto the new one and not need any recoding? This is the bit I mean below....

    Any suggestions appreciated!

I need the car back on the road asap!!

    Thanks!!

whilst not specific to your engine, I know on the 2.5 TDI V6 injection pumps, its only on and around 2002 onwards that the injection pump ECU is security coded to the instrument cluster and engine ECU. Perhaps same on your AFN ?

In general terms, on vehicles that have security, the Immobiliser is always in the cluster which is also coded & paired to the engine ECU and other ECUs depending on age and which ones are present.

So if this is the case, how do I go about getting it re coded??

My suggestion is you may not even need to worry. Do some digging on whether the pump ECU at that age is security coded - my guess not but i could be wrong. Ie its a simple swap so long as ECU soft coding is the same which is not a security issue and can be verified with VCDS in a jiffy.

Would swapping the part above or any other to that effect assist if the unit was coded to the car?

I mean the electrical boxes can be the only bits that can store coded information.... So If it turns out it is coded, surely changing the electrical bits and bobs should remove the need for recoding as surely only they will store that info??

If I am barking up the wrong tree please let me know....

Yes you are correct. If you are able to transplant the ECU off the pump then all should be good assuming that it doesn't need security coding. Same applies to ABS modules and pumps..

AFN pumps are a straight swap no coding needed

Is it worth changing the electrical box thingy over keeping the original one that is on the car??
