I'm after super bright bulbs for my car so looking into HID kits

The Octavia takes H7 for dipped and H1 for main beam

Don't fit illegal hid kits, either go proper OEM with washers and self levellers or fit legal halogen bulbs such as OSRAM Nightbreakers or Philips Xtreme vision.

IMHO - decent quality bulbs would be the most economic option, I can attest to the quality of nightbreakers - although I'm currently not running them thanks to Fords stupid headlight design.

If you're after HIDs, I'm sure Chris will help you with the OEM option.

Euro car parts were doing HID kits before Xmas for £39.99 retail or if your trade down to £29.99,don't know about the legality of them but got to be worth a punt, you'll pay nearly £20 for tidy bulbs

just because ecp sell them doesn't make them legal to fit. fine for off road use only though, same as the 120 watt bulbs you can buy. hids can only be fitted into the correct projector headlights with washers and self levelling. anything else is illegal and will fail an mot test. you also face the risk of a vigilanty mob running you off the road and torching your car.

Retrofit HIDs are only legal if you've got:

    a) a headlight self-levelling system

    b) headlight washers

    c) projector (not reflector) assemblies into which you plan to install the HID bulbs.

Even then you may not get the results you are hoping for.

Projector assemblies designed for halogen bulbs are different to those designed for HID bulbs. The light source (the 'filament', for want of a better term) in an HID bulb isn't in exactly the same place as that in a halogen bulb, so when an HID bulb is put in a halogen projector, the beam cut-off is likely to be blurred at best, and any scatter (intentional or otherwise) above that cut-off will be much more noticeable - especially to other drivers - because the light produced by the HID is much, much brighter.

Putting HIDs (no matter how much they cost) in bog-standard reflector headlights is a guaranteed knuckle sandwich from the hapless motorist you've just blinded. Assuming he can see you for the two balls of light burned into his retinas, that is.

For what it's worth, I've thought about this a lot. I've got an allroad which has all three of the things required to be legal, but my projectors are for halogen bulbs and not HID, so it's with no little regret (especially because the dips on this car are notoriously sh*te) that I've decided to make the best of a bad job by putting Osram Nightbreaker bulbs in instead, and getting Mrs Phutters to walk a hundred yards ahead of me shining a powerful LED torch.
