    Welcome to the forum.

Don't bother with a TDI if your only doing local school runs unless as you say your doing weekend motorway runs as the DPF won't like it.

If you have access to VAG-COM\VCDS you can do a Diesel Particle Filter Emergency Regeneration or a dealer can do a full regen.

If you have access to VAG-COM\VCDS you can check the ash content, this is mine from last year 9ml.

Thank you very much guys for the info, what if i go for a 1.9 tdi 2008 or 2009 reg ?My work place is 3 miles away from home, and i do a school run on my break which is again another 3 miles away from my work place , then back to work again and finish work back to home again another 3 miles.well 2.75 miles. total i do 11 to 12 miles a day.so if i go and buy a 1.9 tdi will i get dpf problems ?

Can the 1.9 engine get heated within 2.5 to 3 miles trip ?

if dpf gets blocked will that lead to other problems like glow plugs and fuel injectors and any other issues related to it ?

can we get dpf cleaned so many times as i know a garage which does oven furnce heated cleaning.

if i put full tank shell v power diesel and add dpf cleaning liquid once a month will my short trips prevent dpf getting blocked ?

also if i do a motor way driving at least once in 2 weeks is that any good ?

please help me guys i thought of getting 1.6fsi but then finds out 1.9 gives more fuel efficent in tdi please advice

Is there any common problems i need to llok in to 1.9tdi when i buy that car

    please please please help......................

Twin Charger is cheating! Both my arms are stronger than your one!

To be honest though the benefit of diesel is that in the torque it feels fast, 1.9 130 tdi always felt as quick as any hot hatch, but were significantly slower. In gear grunt on a diesel is fantastic.

Get a small turbo petrol and you wont regret it, not issues lighter engine and still turbo grunt.

I changed my 2.0 tdi for a 1.4 petrol when I moved to live in a city anticipating lots of short, stop start journeys and possible DPF issues
the 1.4tsi lacks the effortless torque of the diesel, but trust me, you will be amazed by its performance and will be entirely happy on a motorway
take a test drive & see for yourself

Diesels do take longer to warm up because more of the heat produced does more work than a petrol engine that's why they are better on fuel.

When I was working I only lived 4.5 miles from work so mine just reached normal operative temp in that distance. To prevent the DPF clogging I give it a blast up the motorway every couple weeks. As my picture shows my ash content is low.

You say you do weekend motorway driving so I don't see you having a problem.

It's a matter of opinion / personal choice Keith, but I reckon you have made a pretty good case for avoiding a diesel mon-fri, especially so in winter with misted windscreens etc
I drive like a bit of an old fart these days but have no trouble in exceeding 40 mpg on longer journeys
I suppose the missing piece of the jigsaw could be the length / frequency of the OP's motorway trips
