After deciding to keep my Passat after many trials and tribulations, I'm still having trouble with engine power issues (lack of it). Its 1.8 20v NON turbo 1999 petrol. I have a diagnostics which shows the measuring blocks and had a play with that today so I thought I'd post my findings and see if anyone can shed any light on if they look suspect or not. So here goes:- Block 032 (warmed up) 1st field = 000.9 or 000.7 2nd field = 000.0
These values were at idle and driving at around 30 to 40 mph.
    Block 002 field 4 = at idle around 2.8 g/s
and a ruddy good rev going up a hill in second gear, the highest was around 67.0 g/s.
Also noted my coolant temp was spot on at 90c but the inlet air temp was hovering around 31/32c (considering outside was 5c isn't that a tad high?)

One last thing thats started bugging me just recently is my steering has developed a strange noise! It only occurs after driving for some time (well warmed up) and is apparent when slowly manouvering (say into a space) at slow speeds and turning the steering wheel at the same time as revving a little to move the car. It sounds like an old pirate ship creaking! It sounded like it increased along with the revs going up so whether its something to do with fluid being never changed, not sure. Would love to know if anyone else had this and what the culprit was. Many thanks...

    Hi
yes the power steering noise could possibly be the fluid as cold temps make it thicker if its old but also check first the belt it may be because of all the rain we’ve had lately that the belt has slipped through getting wet and the surface of the belt has become glazed this makes them creak under load. A fluid change would be a good plan if its old tho

Thanks for the advice, probably the way to go. Just had another thought about the MAF, as I was experimenting one day, I had the bonnet open with engine idling and running lumpy and horrible as usual and I put my hand flat on top of the engine cover, I could feel a lot of vibration like it was deep down (bit hard to explain) so I immediately unplugged the MAF and then felt again and it was soo much smoother. Driving with it unplugged doesnt feel any different than when its plugged in though! Thats why I'm not sure if MAF is knackered or if theres a vacuum leak fooling the system with more air than the MAF is getting. Still dont get any fault codes either.
