Hi, I bought a 5yr old 2.0TDI SLine Auto A6 with 50k on the clock and full main dealer service history in November, and just before Christmas the oil pump failed on the motorway and caused the engine to cook itself before I could turn it off. Now I have to have a complete new engine, turbo etc. My question is, is this something that fails regularly and do you think it's worth seeing if Audi would contribute to the cost, as the bill is looking to be around £5-6k? Thanks.

YES, Certainly contact Audi and mention about it being a well known failure / weak point, FASH etc etc and let them know you are not best pleased and fight for some type of contribution.

Personally I'd ask for fully paid repair and see where you go from there.

I had a similar issue with my 07 plate FASH and a problem with the tandem fuel pump, in tank lift pump and various other issues resulting in a £1600 bill. I immediately contacted Audi and fought my case even though the car was out of warranty and I got a fully paid resolution from them.

Obviously that won't always be the case, but..........

Don't ask and you certainly won't get!

    Good luck

Cypher, sorry to hear of your problems especially on such a new purchase.

As Jim says no harm in trying and just remember to be polite yet firm.

Am guessing that your car came with no sort of warranty whatsoever, hence your post?

If Audi don't come through the there are companies out there that do engine swaps at a lot cheaper price than £5-£6k

Here's one for instance....no experience of them and other side of the country to you....and crucially your car would have to be trailered there causing you yt more expense.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice, I'll write a letter off to Audi UK and see what happens. I'm probably going to have to pay the bill to start with, as the warranty from the independant dealer I bought if from was basically worthless. If Audi do respond to me but only sympathise then potentially I may go down the trading standards route with the dealers.

You never know though Audi may come back and surprise me, especially if this is a well know failure in the engine design.

I can honestly say that I've hated every minute of not having a car over Christmas and New Year!

Up until last month I volunteered for Citizens Advice, so you may find the following link useful:

Citizens Advice - The car you bought is faulty

What I would say is that I am surprised that, given the age of the car/time you've had it and the fact that it came with a warranty from the dealer, that you'll not be able to resolve the issue if Audi can't step up to the plate.

Oh, and if going down the Trading Standards route (or indeed small claims court) it is advisable to write to them (sending recorded delivery) advising them of your unhappiness and giving them 14 days to respond. Both TS and SCC would require that you do this prior to seeking their help..there are drafts letters on the AdviceGuide website to aid you:

Citizens Advice - Taking action about consumer problems

I would start the process rolling with the trader in tandem with pursuing Audi

    Good luck!

Thanks Mark, will check out the links and make sure that I issue the letters to both once I get my car back. Really need my car back for work etc and know that if I pursure the legal route with the dealers whilst they have the car they either won't return it or fix it until the case is resolved, which could take a few months at best.

Court rejects dealer's right to repair - Car Dealer Magazine

using this case as an example, and after doing your homework, you might just get the car repaired and meet the selling dealer in court to settle up with you. also read up on the sales of goods act . you might think the warranty you got is worthless, but its not in the eyes of the law.

Thanks Zollaf, will try to recoup the costs, but I had to get the car recovered to the dealers in the first instance as I thought they would carry out all the work as part of the warranty cover. I only found out how little it covered when they confirmed the extent of the engine failure after taking it to pieces.

Good link though and it will all help when I do take things further.
