    Hi Everyone

Does any body know whether I could use existing 16" steel wheel winter wheels on the new Mk7 GTD as I bought a set for my Mk6 GTD ?? I have a mk7 GTD on order I know it has 18" wheels as standard.
I did read it has beefier brakes but not sure how much bigger and if they would fit over bigger brake calipers and they are and I think only on the front looking at various pictures in brochures etc ????
Could anybody help with this info ??

    Regards

    Paul

I'd be interested to hear the answer to this one also. If not 16", I'd be interested in hearing about 17" wheels.

All compatible sizes for your particular car will be listed either inside the fuel filler flap or the drivers door jam area.

Purely in terms of diameter then 16" wheels are fine, VW are offering 16" Aspens with winter tyres as their offering. You will need to be careful about offset with your existing steel wheels, Mk7 GTD has an offset of 49.
Personally I don't like the look of 16" wheels on my GTD and I opted for 17's

Which 17s did you go for? Did you have to adjust for the circumference to keep the speedo and miles correct?

This is what I bought (from mytyres.co.uk)

    Rim : DEZENT TD black 7.00 x 17 (LK 5/112, OS 48)
    Tyre : Nokian WR-A3 205/50 R17 93V

Rolling radius is the same as the original 18's so no issues with speedo etc

Wintertires should be high in profile and narrow. Opting for 17" when 16" will fit on your car (givven brakedisc + caliper sizing) isnt giving you the best possible grip.
Winter roads see us pushing through ice, snow, slush and water. Wintertire thread is optimizd to handel diffrent combinations of this (depends on the tire. Nokian WR are more wetroad oriented then the snow/Ice Nokian Hakkapelitta R). But a narrow tire will offer better "cut through" down to the solidstuff underneath, where a wider tire will aquaplane or "surf" on top. Generally not something you want. Take a example of the rally cars using wintertires. They are narrow, high in profile and extremly grooved in the thread. The reason for using a high profile is twofold. First it allows the tire to flex and more with smaller changes in surfacestructure and second it signals earlier to the driver when the car is about to loose its grip.

I like the look of the 17" wheels aswell, but to a knowledgable driver, putting them on signals that you want "Show"more then "Go". I went with 15" on our GT since it wasthe thinnest option out there.

Amullo, while I'm sure your comments are absolutely correct my first point would be the the width of the tyre is much more important than profile hence my choice of 205 width. Regarding profile then putting 16" wheels and hence a high profile tyre does nothing for the performance and safety of my GTD when driving in the more normal winter conditions here in the UK, i.e. coldish and wet. The tyres I chose, after a lot of research, meet my requirements perfectly for UK conditions and being V rated rather than the more typical H then their performance is more in keeping with a GTD for when our weather allows

Like you say Andy. It depends in how and why you need tires and what conditions you will be using them in.

My day to day winter drive equals snow, ice and -8c/15f or below.
