    8000 mile update

Just thought readers may be interested to see my comments after 9 months and 8000 miles of 2.0 GT Tdi DSG ownership.

The overall package is fantastic – quiet, smooth, refined, relaxing, enjoyable and beautifully engineered.

This is my first diesel and so far I am most impressed. The torque is terrific and mated to the 6spd DSG performance is more than enough for my needs. I have managed a best ever 56mpg and currently averaging over 50mpg on most journeys – the car computer states 47.6mpg over the last 3000 miles – and considering a high percentage of that is town/30mph driving that seems pretty good. I would have hoped for more compared to the official VW figures – as has been discussed at great length on this site before – but it will do for me – and the figures are getting noticeably better with the miles.

I did notice that on many journeys after first purchase the DPF was going through its cycle when I stopped. This appears to have settled down and is rarely noticed.

Having migrated from a manual the DSG is a real revelation. The gear changes are all but imperceptible and rarely does it get the gearing wrong. Having the paddles behind the wheel is great however when you want to drop a gear or two for overtaking/having a quick blast on a b-road! Using the “Driver Profile” selection makes a major difference on the gear changes. Very, very early changes in “Eco” – and really holds the gears in “Sport”.

Discover Pro sat-nav is terrific. Being able to input postcodes is great – although could be friendlier – why have to go to “town” input and then choose postcode?? I have found the voice control particularly responsive. I was however surprised at how little info there was in the handbook. Through trial and error I have found quite a few other voice commands that are not mentioned – such as “zoom in/out”, “zoom to a certain level i.e. 1 mile”, “auto-zoom” and being able to enter postcodes. The later is surprisingly capable and almost always hears correctly first time. Some of the voice prompts from the sat-nav amuse, such as “Please speak more quietly” and “there is too much background noise”. Like having a teacher in the car!!

Adaptive cruise works very well – once you have the confidence in the system. Bringing the car to a total stop, and switching the engine off without any driver influence is very strange – but superb in stop/start traffic jam situations.

Tyre Pressure monitoring is something I have never had on a car before – but wow was it useful the other day. Backing out of the garage the TPMS light/warning came on. A screw had punctured the tyre tread leading to a gradual (not complete) loss of pressure. I was able to put the car back into the garage, take the wheel to my local tyre dealer for a fix Without TPMS I would have set off on my long journey on a wet, manky day and would have ended up being stranded on the roadside changing a wheel.

Seat heating (with leather) has certainly improved since the Mk6 – now heats up much, much faster.

    Negatives

I would be most interested to learn if anyone has suffered from any of the following.

Whilst filling the washer-fluid the other day I realised it was gushing onto the drive. Reaching down the filler-neck behind the headlight I found the neck had become detached from the bottle. I have “pushed” it back and it appears okay – but it is not a very secure connection from what I can feel.

The “Front Assist” radar warning has “warned” me visually/audibly on several occasions for no reason. Sometimes it appears to be going through a dip in the road – whether the radar senses the road “coming up to it” and reacts I don’t know – but it is rather irritating and does cause the heart to skip a beat!! At other times the road is flat, nothing in front of the car??

Whilst closing the driver’s door one day the cover that covers the door lock fell to the ground. This is made to be removed in case you need to use the key for access to the vehicle – and appears to “snap” into position. However mine appears to been fitted incorrectly and the “snap” locators have been snapped off. Currently being held with a dob of silicone – something to sort with the dealer.

I have also been very surprised at the lack of servicing information in the handbook. I am one of those people that actually read the handbook/service schedule. All my previous VW’s (up to and including the Mk6) service schedules stated in detail the servicing intervals & what was required at each service. Mk7 Golf – just main service intervals. “Your dealer will advise” the book states. Well I would rather know the information myself – and what happens when the car is not serviced at the main agent? When/if does my DSG fluid need changing, belt changes, pollen filter etc etc. Again something I will check with the dealer.

Overall these are minor gripes and most can easily be sorted. I haven’t regretted the purchase of my MK7 for a moment. Every time I drive it it brings a smile to my face.

Pleased to hear some more positive feedback for a change.

Same car as you (& now 13k miles 9.5 months)

As you asked no washer filling problem, door lock cover still there, Front Assist - no warnings that I havn't been able to see the reason for.

Like you I agree the service book details are sparse and obtained the VW service schedule details (excluding normal oil/ filter changes) of what is required and when are:

    Dust/Pollen filter 60,000kms or 2 years.
Air Filter change 90,000kms or 6 years.
    Diesel Fuel filter change 90,000kms.
    DSG oil/fliter change 60,000kms
    Cambelt change(now Longlife ) 210,000kms
    DPF check 210,000kms

I particularly like the technology fitted on the Mk7 and I'm impressed with all the useful features built into this model.

Fuel consumption is continuing to improve for me as the car gets properly run in.
I noticed it read 69.6 mpg ave over a 67 mile trip this afternoon (mainly 'A' roads in normal mode )
The first time its actually exceeded book figures so I'm more than satisfied.

Very good write up. Your MPG will improve once she's "run in" 100,000 miles should do it

    2.0 GT Tdi 150 DSG

I have the same model. I picked it up in early March 2013. It is nearly 9,000 miles.

I agree with your overall positive write up. -"The overall package is fantastic – quiet, smooth, refined, relaxing, enjoyable and beautifully engineered."

The washer fluid connectors have been dodgy in a number of VW Group cars. Polos and Ibizas have problems well written up on the Internet. Yours is the first problem I've hard about with a Mk 7 Golf.
The Front assist has had 2 major errors for me. Once when I was passing a bus on the inside. The bus was turning right, I was not, and the assist decided it did not like it and jammed on the brakes. The other was on a bendy road, when it decided I was going to run in to something coming the other way.
I've not had your problem with dips in the road, though. I wonder if the radar sensor is properly mounted?

    My Door has been fine.
On the "Garage knows best" philosophy of the VW group, Seat told me that it could not/would not tell me the radio code for daughter's new Ibiza FR. "You would need to bring it in to the garage for that, sir".
The group have decided that we drivers are not customers at all. Just sources of money for them and their dealers.

My gripes are well known on here. This 150bhp car with alleged eco struggles, in eco mode, to do 45mpg whilst my Mk 5 170 easily did 45 mpg without any of the eco bull. The other gripe if their lies about electric seat memory. I wanted leather/electric/memory seats, as I had on an earlier Passat, and as were described in the pricelist, and my copy of my manual. They decided to change their minds. For me, elec seats without memory is a bit like giving a bike to a fish.

    Thanks for your comments.

Interesting your comments on the washer bottle and front assist - i will be contacting my dealer about them.

I have to say the "eco" mode does provide the best mpg for me. I am surprised you are not getting better mpg. Almost every journey gives 50mpg + and as mentioned much of that is slow town driving - the "coasting" function I am sure must help a little and I do try to use this as whenever possible.

Agreed regarding memory seats. I too wanted memory as I am 6' and other members of the family are much shorter. Most disappointed it wasn't available - especially considering the price of the leather seats!

My other gripe with the first brochures was the confusion regarding "Traffic Sign Recognition". I have the discover pro nav but not the lane assist camera. I'm happy with my choice but even now there appears to be confusion on this forum regarding the spec. Not very VW!

It seems as if there are few people with cars of exactly the same age on here. Here's my thoughts at 8,700 miles and 7 months.

The Good. Everything apart from the bad. Lovely car, very comfortable, good handling, very good space, a fair bit of poke. Probably the best out there in its class.

    The Bad.
MPG - just awful. I struggle to reach 50 mpg on most journeys (usually around 45-46mpg). Best I've ever had is 57 mpg (driving at 50mph in 5th/6th for 2 hours on A roads). Motorway driving is around 49-50mpg, sometimes getting to 54 with a strong tailwind...! Automatic regens are still going on every 200 miles or so, further killing the overall economy.
Wipers - they are just naff. Front and back (but especially the back). The nozzle at the back leaks after use too. I have to regularly clean the windscreens manually to avoid smearing.
Rattles - The panel where my left leg/knee rests when driving is rattling on bumpy roads (basically any urban road and some A roads). Also, there's a 2krpm resonance rattle that is getting worse over time (exactly where the car revs at 70-75 mph in 6th), which gives me headaches on motorway journeys. Not quite sure where it is, and I don't have any confidence that the dealer is going to invest time in trying to sort that one out...
Air recirculation - does this actually work for anyone? I have to sit in traffic on a daily basis, and regularly find myself switching on manual recirc mode.

I try not to get hung up by the bad, but like I said, everything is good, apart from the bad.

I'm coming up for my first service at 10k. Should I expect an oil change?

Your leaking washer nozzle at the rear car can be rectified with a simple pipe/valve kit which your dealer can fit if its really an issue.

Not sure if you have Climatronic and you are not getting air recirc to automatically function or if you have manual aircon and are manually switching it on to stop outside air entering the car ?

The air recirc by the way does not function if you have air distribution switched to the screen.

Your question as to whether you will get an oil change at your 10k service the answer is yes plus a oil filter change unless your car is set for Longlife Service regime when the car will indicate when the service is due depending on driving style, usage etc. Normally up to a maximum of 18k miles or two years in that case.

I have Climatronic, and in the menu there is an option for automatic recirculation (e.g. when the air in front smells of diesel). I haven't noticed it kick in, as there has been no change in pitch from the fans.

My car should not be down for a long life service scheme. In any case, I will actively resist this, as I do a reasonable amount of stop start driving and I have relatively little faith in the long life regimes (heard some bad stories, especially if you plan to keep the car for ever). Ideally, I would like a full oil/filter change.

Apparently the automatic air recirculation will switch on if the system ' detects an increase in the concentration of noxious substances in the outside air ' ......' the system cannot detect unpleasant odours' quote.

That's exactly my point. Would have thought that diesel fumes would be pretty noxious (as well as smelling bad)!!
