Recently I've heard a weird noise from the car & I can't help but think it's something that's about to go soon.

A bit of background: my dmf (or I assume it is) has been suspect for nearly 80,000 miles now, since I changed down into 2nd while looking for 4th. Apart from the usual judder at take off sometimes, it's not caused any major problems though.

However about 3,4 or 5 times in the last couple of months I've struggled to find 1st gear. Only occasionally though.

More recently I had the cambelt change bodged & did a lot of miles with it slack, before getting it changed again properly.

Even more recently, I had it remapped.

And to bring us up to date, the last couple of weeks I've heard a couple of weird noises from the car. Best way I can describe the first noise is like a yappy dog barking in the distance or a woman having a 'crisis' (from what I gather from movies, obviously it doesn't happen in real life ) and it mainly happens when I depress & release the clutch pedal or when I let my foot off the accelerator. Even more occasionally though, I'll hear the noise repetitively about every half a second while driving along normally, sometimes accompanied by a stuttering in the engine.

The second noise is when I'm motoring along giving it some welly in 4th or 5th & when the revs get up, I can hear a noise that sounds like when you used to put a playing card in your bicycle spokes as a kid. Only at higher gear & revs though.

Do those symptoms sound familiar to anyone? I had a scan done the other day, albeit a generic Bosch scanner & I don't think anything was flagged up.

Hmmm doesn't sound too good Paul, sorry I can't be more help mate.

    How many miles?
Has the clutch been changed from new?
1st gear - could this be unrelated and perhaps the gear synchros and or shift collar?

    A6 Manual transmission fluid change??

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you though and keeping an eye on this thread too, same car, same engine, slightly less miles>>>>nervous!

    Good luck

I've a feeling it's cgoing to be clutch related, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

It's done 146,000 & yes, has original everything except Battery, intercooler & reverse light switch.

    Cheers Jim.

You've done well at that mileage having just to replace those bits plus considering some clutches and dmf's don't make it to 50k.

Things can only get better, we won't have another Friday 13th for another 6 months

Yeah I reckon I've done alright out of it. Bring on another hundred thousand or two. But really, I wonder how long I could have expected to get out of the clutch & dmf.

sounds like it could be the dmf, but you either have to replace it and hope it is that or pay someone to investigate or wait until it goes bang properly, which may make a mess and cost you a LOT more. dmf comes out through bellhousing=new gearbox. if it takes the end of the crank with it, new engine as well.

Thank you Zoll. I'll start the saving now. I did get quoted £580 by a forum sponsor for clutch kit & dmf, so it's less scary than some people pay.

I'va attached a sound recording of my drive last night. It's quite feint, but at about 21 or 22 seconds, you can hear the dog bark noise, then at around 55 seconds, you can hear that rasp the engine makes under acceleration sometimes. Not sure if it'll help, but at least you know what the noise is I'm trying to describe.

Mate I think I've had the same or similar sound atill have and the cars done prob 10K + miles since it started, I dont have any issues with changing gear though at any time just the sound. I'm sure I've posted about it I'll try and find it. Unfortunately I can't get the sound thing you posted to play without signing up to drop box and I don't want to (no offence)
My sound is in depressing the clutch changing through the gears and it sounds like a faint low pitch droneing sound. The only way I can describe it is it's a bit like vibrating your tongue on the roof of your mouth (no one elses)

Lol. Feel free to email it through to me Chaddrts & I'll try to upload it through my dropbox account.

I wouldn't describe mine as low pitch though, it's quite a high pitch whoop sound. It's only a recent development & my guess was either something wheel related or clutch/dmf. It csn also hapoen while cruising along not using the clutch or gearstick.
