Yes, another one of those threads...

    2007 2.0 TDI PD 140 DSG saloon, 122k.

Over the last week the car has been having intermittent parking brake warnings. I've just bought VCDS. Seemed worth it.

The code was '02431 - right parking brake motor (V283) resistance to movement. 003 mechanical failure - intermittent.'
(I have the full text file that I can past into the thread if it's preferable)

I bought a replacement TRW caliper and set about fitting it.

I've seen the Ross Tech tutorial regarding changing the rear pads: you're supposed to connect a battery charger to supply a steady 12v and use VCDS to retract the pistons. I wasn't changing the pads so did not do this. The tutorial advises running a full scan before-hand to make sure there are no brake-related codes and only if there aren't, continue changing the pads. I *do* have a brake-related code so did not follow the pad procedure.

Ignition and parking brake off, I disconnected the 12v supply from the affected caliper, unscrewed the slider bolts, removed the hydraulic lines and installed the new caliper in reverse order and then bled it.
At no point was VCDS used to alter the caliper motors during this process and at no point was the EPB button pressed.

I ran a full scan after this was completed and a new code appeared: '02433 - supply voltage for right parking brake motor (V283). 011 open circuit MIL on.'
This code will not clear. The 12v caliper supply is definitely plugged in.

The new code is accompanied by these two new ones:
    '005714 - please check DTC memory of transmission controller. P1652 - 008.'
    '00473 - control module for electric park/handbrake (J540). 013 check DTC memory - intermittent.'

    My questions:

    - What is my next step? I wanted to begin some king of recalibration process after the new caliper was fitted but the new code is an unexpected surprise and a cause for concern. I assume it's better investigated than ignored.

    - Why has this code appeared? I did not move the motors with VCDS unwittingly. I did not press the EPB button before any kind of recalibration process.

    ---

I have registered for Ross Tech support and am awaiting a reply but it's Sunday soon and don't hold out much hope.

    Thanks all.

Check the plug to the calipper mate, they can be a pig to plug in,make sure it clicks in otherwise you get the above code.I`m very positive thats your problem.

I had the same problem with my A6 after changing the rear pads. As above the plugs that go into the caliper are a right PITA. I ended up having to GEF a wire repair kit from TPS before the caliper would function again.

Your procedure for fitting the new caliper is wrong. Check my site

Cheers for the replies. I'll double check the connection.

Martin, your site looks like a brilliant resource but I can't see the link to a caliper removal process, only pad change.
Can you link me to the caliper removal/change process?

Turpal, what procedure did you use?

Anyone: is there a voltage I can measure at the caliper plug to determine whether it's totally dead or not? Or is it only energised when applying the parking brake (which would make sense)?
I've tried to make sure the plug is connected properly again this morning and even plugged it back into the old caliper but the code still will not reset so I guess there is a signal supply problem through the wire?

Just pumped the brakes and applied EPB twice.Make sure you haven`t damaged nothing removing and refitting.Ideally when changing a calipper you should release the handbrake on both sides as if you changing the pads and with the new caliper fitted recalibrate etc. using VCDS.As I said I had no issues. Is it releasing the handbrake? If it does just clear the codes and see what happens.I usually fix the mechanical fault on then with no need changing, cost around £140 less.

Do you mean, is it releasing when the dashboard button is pressed or is it releasing when I try to use VCDS to rewind the caliper motors?
I haven't even tried to used the EPB button yet, for fear of it causing even more issues. I've also not tried to rewind the motors with VCDS. I don't know if the button would do anything: it's not lighting up like it used to and the dashboard is displaying the EPB symbol-with-line-through and an error message.

Ah,I see,so you disconnected the plug and the ecu stored the fault and you never tryed anything lol.If you have VCDS recalibrate the it if not just just do a couple times EPB on and off it should clear.Keep posting.
